Bill: Media Nationalisation

Details

Submitted by[?]: Alorian Communist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 2056

Description[?]:

Foreign, multi-national corporations are brainwashing the people of Aloria! Corporate conglomerates are establishing a strangle-hold monopoly on information and it is worrying. We must act now.

Having the entire media state-funded (not controlled, just funded) will make it more impartial, independant and lead to a higher quality of programming. There will be more variety as programmes that dont have large enough audiences to be screened on networks, or are too controversial to be screened by them will find a home. At the moment there is a worrying lack of intellectual programs as networks go for controversial, sensationalist programmes to grab ratings. The national IQ is however suffering from this! Nationalise the media and watch as our society reaps the benefits.

Different channels will be operated differently: Some will function as standard public media, such as the BBC. Others will be run by workers' co-operatives. Yet others might charge a fee from their viewers (and therefore be controlled by those viewers). But no channel shall broadcast any advertising.

MessageThis would put an unecessary burden on the budget. We already have a station for the purposes you describe, and if the people are for you, obviously the 'propoganda' you speak of isn't really working. Of course, we sincerely doubt this 'propoganda' exists. We would also like to highlight our argument against communism (in the cabinet bill, soon to be posted on the national board), which shows that these stations woudl likely be used for Communist propoganda should they be given enough power, and these are used before or during forced labour, to give 'the common man' false hope and make him work harder for less.

MessageContraversial programming may be censored, additonally, shoudl it undermine the 'perfect' goverment, once this communist nightmare had manifested.

MessageNo, as there will be safeguards. It is government funded, not controlled. The appointment to run the channels will not be made politically, and there shall be a independant watchdog ensuring neutral programming. Besides, the media is hardly free at the moment as every channel is owned by some of the wealthiest people in the nation.

MessageYes, 'independant.' And funding can be used for bribery. I will set up a resolution to ensure private programming and advertising is up to scratch. However, when the control goes fully into the hands of the government, then there is really nobody to complain to, as everyone can be silenced.

Keep it private. And were the Green Socialists always aginst it?
