Bill: Election Reform, March 3998

Details

Submitted by[?]: The Worker's Union (WU)

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: June 3999

Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

We propose for the terms between elections be extended to 3 years instead of the current 2. We were the party to initially cut down the time between elections to 2 years but over the past ~40 years we have seen some issues with this. As it stands almost half of a representative's time goes towards elections, and the short time for terms means there are problems with experience and long term thinking in the House of Representatives.

Chairman of the Workers Union

MessageOOC: I would suggest that Rutania's current 24 month term length is unique (we're in a small group of about 5 or so nations that have the same law), changing it would make us carbon copies of most of the other game's countries. The only thing that makes Rutania unique politically is its short term lengths - we have a "President" and a HOG like about 90% of the others in this game. I say if rather than trying to standardise Rutania, go play somewhere else instead.

MessageMR speaker, we see it more like this, people's opinions change a lot and for the commonwealth to be a good democracy, the more often people can vote, the better.

MessageOOC: I proposed this change mainly because since we have such a short term length it means you NEED to pump out heaps of bills or else you will notice a large effect in your voters very quickly, and it also means there is a small window to actually propose bills before they will get reset by the elections meaning there is often very little debate. I am not trying to standardise Rutania as this is the only country I have played in and I also voted against having a president who is the HOG so I don't see how that is really relevant.
