Based on and updated from previous version:

Rules of the Game:
Cultural Protocols Index:

Cultural Origins: One of the Jelbic nations. Mixture of ethnic Jelbics (both Hosian and Ahmadist) and Jelbics influenced by Dorvish colonial settlers.
RL Cultural Influences: The Netherlands, Mongolia, Asian cultures and the Middle-East. The main focus is a hybrid of Dutch and the fictional Jelbic cultures. The nation can be compared to Belgium, where you have part Dutch (Flemish) culture and part French (Wallonian) culture. Though in Vanuku the French part is Jelbic.

New players can think of Vanuku’s culture as essentially being Dutch and a fictional version of Mongolian. It is basically the Benelux without the French but with the fictional Jelbic culture thrown in there. A Netherlands with both Middle-Eastern and Asian influences.
The Dutch culture in Vanuku is not Dutch in the real life sense, but is rather the result of Dorvish (Prussian-German) and Jelbic (Mongolian/Turkish/Hungarian/Slavic) cultures mixing and creating a new culture and language.
The Jelbic culture, and specifically the culture of Vanuku, can be a bit complicated and overwhelming when reading it for the first time. Nonetheless players are encouraged to study this thoroughly to fully understand the fictional and different culture of Vanuku.

The coast lines of Vanuku were first settled by Qedarite and Selucian 'colonists' from Cildania and Selucia. During the Jelbo-Tukaric Migrations these were ousted by the migrating Jelbics. Jelbic tribes lived in all of modern day Vanuku.

In the early 800's the legendary Vanukean Merlkai the Conqueror united the north of modern day Vanuku, establishing the first Vanukean state with the Khanate of the Banster. After his conquests most of his subjects turned away from the shamanist faiths of Zollism and Tanhrism and towards Hosianism, except the tribes in the west and south. This Khanate existed until 1246 when the Ahmadi Caliphate annexed it. Most of the remaining shamanists converted to Ahmadism.

The Caliphate remained in charge of Vanuku until 1486 when a descendant of Merlkai ousted the Ahmadists. Most of Vanuku then united into the Archduchy of Banstill but several smaller states still existed.

In 1629 colonists from Dorvik started founding cities and trade posts on the long coastline of Vanuku, this colony was popularly known as Dorvish Majatra. In this period Vanukeaans (Dutch) was also born as a child of the Brmék/Wrnukék tongue and Dundorfian spoken by the colonists. In 1700 the Dorvish left, selling their colonies to the Archduchy of Banstill.

In 1814 a Golden Age started, in many ways like the Renascentia in Selucia, trade and commerce filled the coffers and the most beautiful paintings were made in Vanuku. In 1939 this era of prowess ended as the unrest between the nobility in the north and the republicans in the south escalated.

From 1952 to 1961 a war was fought between the north and the south, ending inconclusive. From 1961 to 2090 Vanuku was a split nation until the War of Unification from 2090 to 2139. In this long war the monarchists in the north were defeated by the republicans, marking the foundation of the Vanuku Federation.

Vanuku has a long history of republicanism in the modern in-game era. The Vanuku Federation lasted from 2139 to 2773, where it was replaced for a few decades by an absolute monarchy. This however was not to last as republican fervor won, declaring the First Republic. In 3045 the nation was invaded by Kalopia, who declared Vanuku a vassal state. Only a few years later they were ousted and the Second Republic was founded. After a period of unrest two fascist parties took over in 3209, declaring the Vanukuian Reich. This lasted until 3245 when a communist dictatorship managed to seize power. Almost half a century later the nation was then taken by royalists, though this state also lasted only fifty years.

After this the era of republicanism returned. From 3359 to 3509 the Banded States of Vanuku was an isolated democratic federation until it was invaded by Barmenia. For almost thirty years it was a vassal state to the Barmenian Shahs. But after a bloody guerrilla war republicans managed to retake the nation in 3538, declaring the second birth of the Banded States. This time however, the nation had a very fascist tone to it.
In the centuries after the nation was in balance and started to look outwards. It became more involved in international conflicts and organizations like Temrkai’s War, the Majatran Union, and so forth. Over the years Vanuku has always had rather sour relations with both Barmenia and Zardugal, while being very friendly with Jelbania and Deltaria.

In 3696 the Crowned Republic was instead formed, showing a shift to royalism in the nation. Vanuku was now led by a Prince and for the first time in centuries the ethnic Jelbics in the nation were no longer discriminated against. Vanuku started accepting its full form during these years, as a bilingual Brmék and Vanukean state.
In 3777 the Khaganate was founded, uniting all Jelbic nations. Vanuku stood at the helm of this pan-Jelbic union. This Khaganate waged a bloody war against Zardugal and after the war the entire union collapsed. Then Vanuku became a republic once more and this free state lasted until a national-socialist takeover in 3851.

The dictatorship ended in 3863 and the Principality of Vanuku was restored. Ever since then Vanuku has been a major international player with plenty of enemies and even a few friends. Majatra is the powder keg of Terra and Vanuku is in the middle of it.

Vanuku is primarily a bilingual nation split between Wrnukék, a Brmék dialect but often recognized as one of the four Jelbic languages, and Vanukeaans. Wrnukék often uses the Selucian script but traditionalists in the western parts of Vanuku will often write it in the original Brmék script. Vanukeaans is a young language finding its origin in the 17th century, it is a merger of Brmék and early Dundorfian spoken by the Dorvish settlers during the short colonial era. The Dorvish colonists actively mixed with the Vanukean natives, thus causing the rise of the new language. It is the most widely spoken language in Vanuku but during the last century Wrnukék is gaining in popularity. Brmék is also widely spoken, as is Jelbék. The Augustan and Majatran minorities often speak their respective languages as a native tongue.

Just as with the languages and cultures Vanuku is also divided in the religious department. Hosianism is in a light majority but divided amongst the different Churches of Terra. The Terran Patriarchal Church from Deltaria has the most followers in Vanuku and is mostly popular in the East and South-East. The Aurorian Patriarchal Church, formerly known as the Selucian Patriarchal Church and the Theognosian Church, enjoy popular support in the South-West and some Northern parts. The Aurorian Patriarchal Church is represented by the Patriarchate of the East in Vanuku (as well as Cobura and Zardugal), the rite differs slightly from the mainstream Aurorian Patriarchal Church. The Apostolic Church of the East, specifically the Barmenian Apostolic Church, is popular amongst Brmek and Kathuran immigrants while the Reformed Hosian Church of Dorvik is, as the name may suggest, the Church of choice for the many Dorvish living in Vanuku.

Ahmadism is a religion that was founded in 1186 and believes Akim to be the only God and Ahmad to be his Prophet. Most Majatrans in Cildania are Ahmadis. Ahmadism is mostly followed by the Trmek, which is the Vanukean name for the ethnic Brmek that reside in Vanuku. The majority of Ahmadis in Vanuku is Israist, following the traditions of the Caliphs from Barmenia.

The Jelbic shamanist religions enjoy a small following in Vanuku, the largest of these is Zollism. Zollism originated after the Jelbic nomads found the old temples of the Qedarite and Selucian settlers that once graced the shores of Vanuku. The Selucian polytheism was combined with the Tanhri belief. Tanhrism is primarily popular amongst Jelbek immigrants.

Yeudism is an ancient Qedarite (Semitic/Abrahamic) religion dedicated to the worship of Elyon as sole divinity, and associated with the Yeudi people. Other very minor religions are the Gao-Showan religions (Guidao, Jienism, Cheng Daenism) that are mostly popular amongst Gao-Showan immigrants.

Ahmadism is a religion that was founded in 1186 and believes Akim to be the only God and Ahmad to be his Prophet. Most Majatrans in Cildania are Ahmadis.

The dominant names in Vanuku should be a mixture of Jelbic and Dutch names, there can be characters solely using the Wrnukék/Brmék/Jelbék names or those solely using Dutch names or both at once. A normal party in Vanuku (as in one not focusing on a minority group) should try to combine both cultures. The occasional Majatran, Augustan, Dorvish or Deltarian name is also acceptable but should not become the majority, these are after all minority cultures within Vanuku.

There is a comprehensive guide on Jelbic names (and a dictionary) listed below together with many sources for Dutch names. Get creative!
