Bill: Mining Sector Support Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Progressive Conservative Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 4045

Description[?]:

After the closing of RRI Inc. in North Vitalli, it is clear that our highly restrictive regulations on pollution are preventing our mining companies from being able to remain economically competitive. We recognize the importance of protecting clean air and clean water, but we feel that slightly scaled back pollution regulations can still accomplish that objective while preventing any more people from losing their jobs.

MessageWhile Parliament has already rejected this measure during the current term, the Neoconservative Party feels obligated to bring another bill to the floor in order to demonstrate our commitment to the economic well-being of those employed by the mining industry after the recent closing of RRI Inc. in May.

MessageIt is interesting that the regulations on the pollution of this industry must be so very punitive that the entire operation must come to a close. We would propose that a mixture of rising labor costs, increased supplies of commodities, and/or a policy shift (though on the moderate side) away from fossil fuels and natural gas to renewable energy sources has contributed to the decrease in viability for this segment of the sector.

Market theory would propose that we allow the business(s) to fail and efficieto work itself out. And welfare theory states that we should seek to provide opportunities for growth and employment to our citizens. Both of those are possible by retraining emoloyees, providing support for clean energy tech, providing community development grants and institution expansion to educate the youth, housing reform, public works projects, a favorable business tax zone for a period of time....etc....

MessageThe GMP has pointed out additional factors that we agree contributed the close of RRI. However, while we acknowledge that rising labor costs and increased supply of commodities (especially after the agreement with Well & SonsĀ® Mining and Drilling Company) likely contributed to this business failure, the cost of meeting our country's highly restrictive pollution regulations was more than likely the driving factor behind years of losses.

Yes, our government's interference in the market has definitely contributed to the rise of clean energy at the expense of the fossil fuel industry, but there are simply not enough jobs produced by the clean energy industry to provide economic security to all of the mining employees who have lost and will more than likely continue to lose their jobs.

Rolling back some environmental regulations to allow the market to save the mining industry is a much better solution than more government spending and intervention in the economy to train miners to fill a limited number of clean energy jobs.
