Bill: OOC/Party RP: 4051 BLFP Primary Season (Dec. onwards)

Details

Submitted by[?]: Beluzian Liberty and Freedom Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: June 4061

Description[?]:

OOC: I figured I'd put the debates and actual primaries for the BLFP here; we should probably do one primary thread in the future though. Also, despite this being done in February, the actions here start in December.

IC: With the BLFP primaries heating up, three candidates are currently running: incumbent Prof. Aaron Geary, whose leadership has led this party since it was created, Sen. Chelsea Aston, whose immigration comments and support for the SLP's Mr. Hammond have caused deep divides in the party, and Sen. Zach Rye, whose promises to act faster than Geary (whose critics often claim overthinks his decisions) and late appearance have painted him as a compromise candidate for those dissatisfied with Geary but condemn Aston's remarks. Geary has been the favorite of party officials, with Aston gaining a few extremist endorsements, though Rye has been getting some senate endorsements as of late.

Hon. Sen. Pocock, the BLFP's most senior senator and nominee for the position of Speaker of the House, was recently asked about endorsements in a press conference. His response was that "there are two very qualified individuals for the position, and then there's Sen. Aston. Now is not a time to divide ourselves, the BLFP has to come together to stop the wave of bigotry and racism growing not just in our party, but in all parties involved in this hectic primary season". In response to Pocock's comments, an official from Aston's camp called him a "sexist, misogynistic pig", claiming that "Pocock only supports Geary and Rye because they're men. Look at his staff; he barely has a woman present".

Rye and Geary agreed to one debate in late December, due to how late the BLFP primary season started and how hectic it's been as of late. The debate revolved largely around the general subjects of military spending, border safety, and immigration, which have been the defining tones of the election season. Geary stuck to his policies of keeping the borders open, keeping a defense-only military, and stated that "unlike my opponent, whose vitriolic personal attacks have no place in Beluzian society, I actually understand that a wall will not make us any safer, and that nobody is going to be willing to pay for such a ridiculous expense, especially not our neighbors". Rye, on the other hand, argued that a completely open border could easily help any terrorists cross without our knowledge, and that while a defensive military is necessary, increasing the budget wouldn't hurt at all. One of his key statements was that "in today's world, to say that we should hamper our own success as a nation based on ideals is just asinine. I know none of us like nuclear weapons, but Mutually Assured Destruction, while a sad and unfortunate truth, is still a truth. It serves as a grim, terrible safety precaution".

MessageSen Wilkins called the remarks by Sen Aston "childish and misguided" and that she "does not know the definition of misogyny" in his first comment on another party's campaign. He also stated, "I hope that the voters of the BLFP do not allow the bigotry seen in the SLP to spread to the rest of the political process".

MessageJan. 9, 4051: In a recent press release, it has been announced that Ms. Curtis will be stepping down from her position as Shadow Minister of Defense, at the request of many in the BLFP, including ultimately Prof. Geary. When asked about her plans for the future, she did not immediately know, stating that she was "still interested in helping the BLFP succeed in future endeavors", and hinted at a possible senatorial campaign after staying out of the public eye for an undetermined period of time.

Sen. Aston's campaign was also largely shaken, when many of her advisers and higher-ranking campaign officials left her campaign. An unnamed source, speaking on condition of anonymity, cited Aston's inability to work with Geary or Rye, and "generally creating an unproductive and vitriolic environment for the 4051 elections".

Many news sources have asked Sen. Aston if she would support the BLFP candidate, regardless of who it was. She immediately responded with saying she would not, and claimed that "Geary and Rye are unqualified and unwilling to take any steps to protect Beluzia. I will not support a coward that hides behind authority and calls it a compromise". Aston also requested that, at the BLFP Nominating Convention in February, Geary's wife Aki Fujimoto-Geary must show her birth certificate "or forfeit her position in the BLFP. If she's not a Beluzian citizen, how can she claim to care about Beluzia? She can't! She and her husband can go back to where she came from".

Sen. Rye condemned her attacks on Ms. Fujimoto-Geary, claiming that "she has been a wonderful asset to this party since the party's formation. To make her show her birth certificate is utter nonsense, racist, and a distraction from the issues". Ms. Fujimoto-Geary issued a press release thanking Sen. Rye's defense, and claiming that, since she is a valid Beluzian citizen, she would show her birth certificate "only after Sen. Aston releases her birth certificate, and possibly an IQ test".

MessagePresident Romanovic criticised Sen. Aston's discriminatory remarks on Sen. Wilkins, saying that he has many female members on his staff and that he pays them equally. The sexist here is Sen Aston herself. She doesn't have a single male member on her staff, and if she appointed one, he would be badly treated

MessageJan. 15th, 5 days before BLFP primaries:

Sen. Chelsea Aston was entertaining prospective voters after one of her notorious rallies, despite security advising her to leave the premises due to the escalation of violence regarding her rallies. A small group of five unidentified people, concealing weapons, approached the senator, and opened fire on her and her security guards. Aston was shot three times, including once in the lung, and hit the floor of the venue before she could grab her own gun. The venue was evacuated, and Aston and two of her guards were transported to the nearest hospital immediately. However, Sen. Aston was pronounced dead on arrival, having sustained a collapsed lung, and a severed artery leading to blood loss. Her two security guards are still in critical condition, but will likely make a full recovery. Local authorities are searching for those responsible for Sen. Aston's death.

Neither Prof. Aaron Geary nor Sen. Zach Rye have responded for comment on the situation.

MessageJan 15th, 5 days before the BPDP primaries

In a press conference held today, Romanovic applauded the five unidentified people, calling them heroes by assassinating Senator Aston. When asked about whether his comments were too extreme, he said that they weren't, considering that Senator Aston was a "filthy piece of shit" and had no right to be born here. When asked about funeral arrangements, Romanovic said that he would not attend the funeral of "a xenophobic whore without any sense of decency" and that he would wish that her body was brought in front of the public to stamp, peed and spit on. He also said that he hoped that the funeral of Senator Aston would be bombed by radical progressive groups or extremist groups so that there would not be any memory of a horrible politician who "betrayed the values of the BLFP and the people of Beluzia".

MessageOut of respect for Sen Aston, Hammond, Carter, and Wilkins agreed to hold off the convention fight until April. Gov Carter was the only one to comment on Romanovic's remarks, saying "they are disgraceful. I disagree with the late senator on pretty much everything, but she does not deserve to die because of her political beliefs." The SLP front-runners called for a halt to all campaigning for at least a week in respect for Sen Aston and the BLFP.

MessageJan. 19th, 1 day before BLFP primaries

Prof. Geary and Sen. Rye appeared today in a joint press conference, stepping off of the campaign trail for the remainder of the BLFP primary season. The joint conference was intended to address the recent death of Sen. Aston. During the press conference, the two both admitted that they "did not know who killed Sen. Aston, and that, while we may not agree with her positions, her unfortunate passing is not a passing we can applaud. Out of respect for Sen. Aston, we will not be campaigning today or tomorrow, and we are looking to try and push back our convention. We would push back the vote, but since it's so close, that would create too much confusion, and too many logistical issues". Prof. Geary then stated that "I believe I speak for both of us when I say that now is not a time for division. Now, especially after such a divisive and vitriolic primary season, is a time to be with your families, and friends. To really be with those important to you. I'd like to ask you all to remind your loved ones how much you truly care about them". The two also extended their gratitude to "the kind words from the candidates from Beluzia's other political parties during such a time". During the entire conference, there was a much more somber tone than previously, and both men seemed clearly shaken by the recent events.

The BLFP ballots in the regions of Bailon and Negunia will still include Sen. Aston, however Iker Ado's, Parlos Decina's, and Iliathar's will not. Funeral services for Sen. Aston have not been decided yet, but will be announced when decided upon.

MessageThe BLFP primary results are in:

73% for Prof. Aaron Geary
24% for Sen. ZachRye
3% for Sen. Chelsea Aston

After the news of Sen. Aston's passing, combined with Romanovic's response, many of Aston's supporters were reportedly considering switching loyalties to the BPDP, to vote for Ueli in the BPDP primaries.

While Prof. Geary won the primaries, he must still be officially nominated at the BLFP Nominating Convention, which has now been pushed back from February, to March.

MessageThe convention in Port Maylord was unsurprising for the BLFP nominations, where Prof. Aaron Geary was declared the winner of the primary season. The convention also took on a more somber tone, in remembrance of Sen. Aston. When asked about such a decision, which was apparently requested by Sen. Rye and Prof. Geary, the two responded by stating that "while we certainly disagreed with her positions and tactics, she was still a person. She believed she was in the right, and her death was unfortunate and untimely".

The BLFP also created the position of Communications Director, which Sen. Rye was offered and graciously accepted. The reasoning behind this, according to Geary, is that "a communications director would be a huge help in communicating our message throughout Beluzia, and help our party organize. Sen. Rye has been a very involved member of the BLFP, and he is clearly willing and ready to take on a greater role for the party. I am more than happy to offer this position to him". The Communications Director would facilitate work across the various regions of Beluzia, and communicate with both local officials and senators in their election efforts, attempting to get them more exposure on a national level. When asked about the position, Rye stated that he was "excited to start, and will take the position after the end of the senate term".

Random fact: In cases where a party has no seat, the default presumption should be that the party is able to contribute to debates in the legislature due to one of its members winning a seat at a by-election. However, players may collectively improvise arrangements of their own to provide a satisfying explanation for how parties with no seats in the legislature can speak and vote there.
