Bill: Firearms Act 4061
Details
Submitted by[?]: Socialist Working Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 4062
Description[?]:
The widespread ownership, possession and use of firearms have no place in a free and democratic society. Increased control of firearms ownership would decrease violent crime, reduce the availability of firearms to criminals and also reduce the availablity of firearms to terrorists. This would also prevent 'mass shooting' scenarios. The Socialist Working Party propose a change in legislation, banning all firearms unless required specifically for professional use in which case, this will be regulated and individuals would have to apply for a shotgun certificate. All automatic and semi automatic weapons such as assault rifles and pistols would be illegal. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change Ownership of guns by private individuals.

Message | Madam Speaker, The government has no place in further curtailing the freedoms of the average citizen. Especially in this most important of rights, the right to self defence and the defence of one's family. To remember the last major terrorist attack in Beluzia you don't have to cast your mind back too far. In fact members of this Senate were killed by so called "freedom fighters" The fact is that the threat we face from extremists of all shades and other aspects of criminality is consistently evolving, and our security forces can't protect everyone at once. I think it would be a disgrace if the Senate betrayed the people by leaving them as sitting ducks in the face of such a threat. While in an ideal world there would be no need for firearms, this is an aspirational point and has no basis on reality. The reality is that our job lies in protecting the rights of our citizens, not taking them away. And this is one of the most fundamental rights. I'd urge Senator's from all parties to join me in rejecting this bill. - Senator Adam Mortisen, Shadow Minister for Internal Affairs |

Message | Madam Speaker For once we actually agree with the Libertarians with something but from a different perspective. We don't feel that mass firearm distribution makes the world safer, in fact we believe the opposite. However, we feel that if you want to own a firearm and can prove that you are responsible by having a license, you should be able too for whatever legal reason you want to. If you feel it actually helps you in a home invasion, then you should be able to have a firearm. If you like to shoot it for fun at a target, then you should be able to, again if you prove that you can be responsible. Madam Speaker, we encourage the senate to reject the current proposal. Message | Madam Speaker, Let me be completely clear, the role of fighting crime and combatting terrorism rests with our police and our intelligence agency. The last thing we need are vigilantes running around with guns. Let's not forget that those extremists wouldn't be armed in the first place if our gun laws were tougher. Paramilitary orginisations are illegal. We have put through a proposal for the police to be unarmed. This will reduce the widespread availability and use of firearms and make our nation safer. Competition shooting and shooting ranges would not be affected by this bill as the clubs could obtain a firearms certificate due to their profession. I urge the senate in the strongest possible terms to reconsider their position. This is our chance to make our nation safer, peaceful, progressive and better for everyone in it. |

Random fact: Did you know you can change the official name of your nation? All you need to do is draw up a new name that is in accordance with the Nation Renaming Guide, pass a bill proposing the name change with a two-thirds majority and then post a request to Moderation on the "Renaming Requests" thread. You can change city and region names in this way too. |
