Message | Madam Speaker, I am shocked by this proposal to remove regulations on animal research. This opens the door to the barbaric treatment and torture of animals and is something we will never support. I also reject the proposal to cut vital government funding to the research and development of lifesaving drugs. This would be a complete disaster and it simply wouldn't be possible to regulate the prices effectively. At present we can afford to keep prescription prices low because we subsidise the research and development of the drugs. Without our investment, pharmaceutical companies would be forced to operate as businesses for profit and the only way to replace subsidies would be raising prescription prices which is yet another policy proposal aimed at hurting low income families. We vote no and strongly urge the rest of the senate to join us. We already have enough financial corruption in this nation. Hugo Emerson Minister for Health & Social Services |

Message | Madam Speaker, The New Liberal Party is, and has always been, an advocate of scientific freedom. Science is what moves us forward as a species, to limit its course is self defeating. However, Minister Emerson's words in this chamber are to be noted. We should, perhaps, consider more carefully the full effects of what this Bill may allow; Cruelty, brutality, inhumanity. Our current laws do not pose serious threat to our ability to develop new medicines, products and solutions to the problems we face. For these reasons, the NLP is reversing its decision to support this Bill. Sen. Keith Thompson Science & Technology Spokesperson, New Liberal Party |
