MessageWe think this will only hurt the workers and the economy. It is not fair for businesses to see their workers go on a strike that has nothing to do with them, it will hurt our economy and cause jobs to be lost.

Secondly we believe that the unions should serve their members and thus need to put every strike up to vote.

The rest of these proposals are dangerous, the NEPP cannot support a move back to socialism.

MessageHow would workers be able to defend their rights effectively if trade unions are not required to hold a ballot before striking? How does the current situation weaken their ability to defend their rights in an orderly and effective manner? This bill would seriously alter the balance of power between labour and business and the Moderate Party opposes any such move, left or right. We oppose this bill

MessageWorkers derive their strength from their ability to act in cooperation and work together to achieve a beneficial outcome for all. Consequently, secondary strike action is an important part of Union's existence. As for the concerns regarding a ballot, a Union cannot be effective in achieving the best outcome for its members if they are required to go through a drawn out process before striking. If a Union is calling strikes which it's members don't support then they are free to leave at any time. Ultimately, Trades Union will not call unpopular strikes.

MessageWe agree with the Moderate Party, the workers must not become a tool of the trade unions in their quest to destroy our economy.

MessageMandating ballots before striking serve to help foster a culture of openness and democracy in the trade unions. We cannot support the vision of authoritarian trade union leaders deciding on when to hold strikes without consulting every member of the particular union. Why should members be forced to leave a trade union they have made contributions to for many years just because the leadership demands a right to call strikes without ordinary members expressing their views. Trade unions must remain instruments of democracy, turning into oligarchies will never serve them well.

MessageThese are legitimate concerns and we understand that they are coming from a position which is fair and, well, moderate. However, one has to the impacts of making a Union ballot its members. Ballots can take weeks, even months to organise, and when discussions need to be concluded quickly (perhaps with the government), that kind of time cannot be wasted. Additionally, it weakens the hand of Union leaders if they are not in a position to call a strike without a ballot, thus snatching more power from the workers and giving it over to bug business. This rhetoric is to be expected from the government, who have made it clear that they do not serve the working man instead they serve the man who lays him off.

MessageWe strongly oppose these proposals, which would be damaging not only to our economy and to industrial relations, but to the cause of democracy within the trade union movement.

The KPL claim to be the champions of working people...so why allow closed shop arrangements, which force workers to belong to unions? And why deny workers their legitimate right to take part in ballots when it comes to deciding whether to take strike action or not?

MessageWe suggest allowing closed shops because, even though we are not huge fans of the idea, they should be allowed to exist. We would like to acknowledge, too, that workers would not be prevented from being balloted, in fact we suspect many Unions would continue the practice as it legitimises their cause, but it provides leaders with the powers they need to combat workplace injustice.
