Bill: Fair Punishment Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Blue Democratic Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: January 4109

Description[?]:

Mr. Speaker,

It's okay to punish criminals, by throwing them away in jail and recording their DNA to have a better chance of convicting them the next time. However it isn't okay to punish law-abiding citizens by recording their DNA and forbidding former criminals, who now behave according to the law, to vote.

MessageMr. Speaker,
While we agree that DNA collection may be limited to only criminals, we disagree with the right to vote. By committing a crime against our great nation or its people, we believe a person forfeits their right to participate in our democracy. We refuse to allow murderers, rapists and drug abusers to decide who runs our nation.

MessageMr. Speaker,

Our party believes in repentance. We shouldn't deny criminals the right to vote when they regret their actions. Of course it's naive to think that all criminals will repent their sins or regret their actions, but those who will, let them have an opportunity in this country as well. Plus the fact that the poorer part of our communities are severely disadvantaged by this current law because poorer people are more likely to end up in jail.
