Human life needs to be respected, or we will continue down the slippery moral slope to a situation where the elderly, the disabled and the ill are neglected and then dispatched simply for being regarded as inconvenient.

MessageWe do not lend credence to 'slippery slope' arguments. The decision to euthanise should be one taken by an individual, not mandated by the state.

MessageWe believe that it is humane to end your own life when you are suffering, ofcourse under supervision of a doctor. The NEPP believes the life is sacred and a treasure, but it also believes the state has no claim nor power over it.

Spokesman for Health and Social Services of the NEPP

MessageI am not sure the opponents of this bill have fully grasped how much pressure an elderly, sick or disabled person may be put under to reach a decision to opt for euthanasia. Families, carers, hospital stuff and others can all - in subtle and sometimes not so subtle ways - heap pressure on patients to reach a fateful decision like this.

If, as a society, we say it is okay to take the lives of people who do not meet a certain conception of healthiness and usefulness, then we send out a profound and unmistakable message to those who find they somehow do not measure up.

We need an ethic of life, not an ethic of death.

I will warn again: euthanasia is a dangerous and slippery slope. We are entering the realm of eugenics here, effectively.

MessageIf you as family member, carer or other individual, are pressuring somebody to take their own life, then that is on you! I would certatinly never do so and I don't know anybody who would!

MessageI urge members to consider how subtle or even unintended the pressure can be. Think about it. A person is sick and dependent upon others for their care. They may feel they have become "a burden", and over time that feeling can grown and be re-enforced by the interactions they have with others around them.

This is a more difficult and complex area than the opponents of this bill are acknowledging.

Our position is simple: society has to send out a message that human life is sacred and must be respected.

We also want to emphasise that those who are seriously ill or incapacitated can still be capable of living meaningful and fulfilled lives - especially if we allow them the opportunity to do that, and don't constantly promote the message that they are a problem and that they should kill themselves!

Lets send out a positive message today: a message of life and not of death!
