| Colonel Octavius Black has died in hospital, months after suffering a debilitating stroke believed to have been brought on by the presidential election defeat in June 4033. The two-term president - was taken ill shortly after losing power to his arch-rival, RAC Party Leader Katherine Benn. He never recovered and last night passed away in his hospital bed aged 72, his family have confirmed. The former military veteran - turned to politics following the bloody Baltusian civil war in which he served. Close aides said he never "forgave" the left parties for their role in that conflict and his critics say his policies often reflected this grudge. During his second term, his style became more autocratic as he named himself Defence Minister and Supreme Commander of Armed forces, as well as Commander in Chief of the Patriotic Security League. At one point he held six cabinet positions after a fall out with Pan-Dundorfian allies which saw them ousted from his coalition top table. Leadership of the Patriotic Party has been taken up by Ralph Mason, who is currently Minority Speaker in the House of Congress. The hard-nosed politician is known to have an isolationist stance and "Baltusia First" approach towards foreign policy but is less militaristic than his predecessor. Moderate Geraldine Varsey has been named deputy leader in what is seen as an olive branch towards the more centrist wing of the party. |
