Details

Description[?]:

Mr. Speaker,

Ever since the formation of my ministry, the government has resolved on a path of greater involvement in world affairs. I'm pleased with the Foreign Minister, the Rt Hon. Alfie Davin of the Hosian Party, for bringing forth KOIL for ratification, among other such treaties as I have requested of him. Furthermore, I am happy to announce to the Imperial Diet that I have already reached out to Rutania, Dorvik, Hawu Mumenhes, the Kundrati Union, and Endralon to formally establish diplomatic relations. These nations, along with Dundorf, which is currently in the ratification process, would mean Luthori has an embassy in every nation in northern Artania. In addition, I have contacted Aloria to discuss furthering our strong economic and military partnership. I have requested all the nations aforementioned for an official state visit to their respective countries in an effort to bolster Luthori's position in regional affairs, to strengthen our relationships with our neighboring countries, and to prepare Luthori's reentry onto the global stage. Ideally, this would culminate in Luthori being voted as one of the members of the World Congress Security Council.

This was meant to provide an update to the Imperial Diet as to the government's stance on foreign policy. If any members have questions, I am willing to take them now.

I yield.

The Rt Hon. Kenneth Buckley MD
Imperial Prime Minister

MessagePrime Minister Buckley,

Allow me to first and foremost thank you for joining us here today and opening up the floor for this discussion. I think this discussion is an important one. I want to express both my personal gratitude and the gratitude of the members of my party for you allowing us to take part in this discussion and for seeking out the input of the members of this body on matters of foreign policy.

As I am sure you, and others, are well aware, I and my party are, shall we say, skeptical of you. Of your intentions. Of your motives. You yourself are a former analyst for the Watkins and Brown Group. Your, and your parties ties, to the financial industry aren't secret. They are well known facts. Consider some of the members of your administration. The new Minister of Education and culture, Margaret Patterson, is a former CFO of Delamare PLC. Not a teacher or student of history and the arts. A financial officer. The new minister of trade and Industry, Gareth Holloway, former CFO of Renou Holdings PLC. Premier of Orange, Rupert Carter, COO of WTD PLC. Your appointed representatives to TERRASSOFT, Gareth Holloway and Nigel Robinson, both formerly chief officers to Renou Holdings PLC.

The point, Prime Minister, that I'm trying to make here is that I and the people who support my party want some sort of assurance that in our dealings concerning foreign policy, as you pursue for our nation a more open and internationalist foreign policy, that the goal isn't one of just opening up the doors of other nations for Watkins and Brown, for Renou, for WTD, to expand into the nations. I want some sort of assurance that the driving force behind these policy decisions isn't just "whats good for the financial industry."

Can you, today Prime Minister, offer us that assurance?

I yield.

MessageMr. Speaker,

I would first like to commend Mr. Turner for his tireless efforts to champion the plights of the poorest among us, those who live in the shadows and have yet to reap the rewards of our ever-expanding economy. Might I add, I would be hard-pressed to find anyone else more vocal, more committed, and more involved in the efforts to fight for the working class in this country.

With that being said, I wish to tackle this issue of corporate involvement in the Hosian Democratic Union for good. It is true that I was a former analyst for Watkins Brown, but Mr. Speaker, that was 6 years ago when I decided to leave and revive the party my forefather Peter Buckley had founded. I have friends in the financial industry, yes, but no more so than Mr. Turner might have in the unions, and certainly not with any scheming or colluding for the takeover of a democratic government. Will the HDU broaden its base and its policies in the coming future? Perhaps, but it is certain that I recognize the need to diversify our caucus. That is why I am embarking on a program within the party to recruit teachers and civil servants, firefighters and veterans, doctors and lawyers, and men and women from all walks of life and from different religions and ethnic sects to represent our party and our policies in the next election and beyond.

I would like to make it clear, however, that I stand behind the appointments of all the people in position thus far. The Rt Hon. Margaret Patterson and the Rt Hon. Gareth Holloway and the Rt Hon. Rupert Carter are all outstanding individuals not only in their fields, but in the fields of their current positions. I did not give recruit or appoint these people out of arbitrariness or whim, both of which are vices in my personal opinion. I know that these people, with long backgrounds in finance, yes, but also with a drive to succeed and a knack for management, can ensure that money is being well-spent and that the departments, and in Mr. Carter's case, the duchy of Orange, are running efficiently.

This does not mean, however, that the HDU will sever all ties with the financial industry, or with the business community for that matter, in the same way Mr. Turner will not sever all ties with organized labor, or the LPU with crackpot Metzists. A core principle of our fundamental ideology is that policies that help business, and that includes small-businesses, ultimately help everyone.

Lastly, allow me to emphatically declare that in no way does the Luthori Chamber of Commerce, or any single corporate entity, sway the direction this government is headed. The businesses may do what they will with their respective agendas concerning operations and investments in other countries, but this government is determined to do what is best for Luthori and its peoples, and as the Imperial Prime Minister, I represent all 99 million Luthorians, whether they voted for me or not, and no matter what their political tendencies may be, I will not waver in my belief that it is my duty to provide them security, safety, prosperity, and a healthy environment to raise their children, pursue their careers, and live out their lives.

I yield.

MessageMr. Speaker,

I want to thank Prime Minister Buckley for his kind words. I am, admittedly flattered and deeply moved. Once again, Prime Minister, thank you. I would also like to commend the prime minister for his years of public service, his commitment to and love for our great nation.

I would like to, Prime Minister, ask that you forgive my, and my party's, skepticism. I don't mean to attack you, or your administration, or Margaret, Gareth, or Rupert personally. I don't know them or even yourself personally well enough to presume to attack you personally. To speak to your or their character or integrity. That is not, nor has it been, my intention.

I believe that you, Prime Minister, can understand, even appreciate, my skepticism of those with such close ties to large corporations, in particular the financial industry. I represent those people who, as you so eloquently and beautifully put it, "live in the shadows and have yet to reap the rewards of our ever-expanding economy." The people I represent, that I daily come to this body and lobby for, haven't not only not reaped the rewards of expanding economy, they've sat and watched as the really wealthy, the successful, the well off, have gotten more wealthy, more successful, and more well off. The Prime Minister is correct in saying the economy is expanding, but for those I represent they're only getting to see that from the outside looking it. Or from the bottom looking up as it were.

I would like the Prime Minister to know that I, myself, nor my party is asking for he or for the HDU to severe their ties with financial industry or with the business community at large. All we're asking for, instead, is a seat at the table. to be represented, to be heard, to be thought about, to be considered when decisions are made.

In that regard, I would like to, on behalf my part and on behalf of the poor, the marginalized, the forgotten, the unrepresented, to thank Prime Minister Buckley for going out of his way to give us a platform to speak, giving us a seat at the table, and allowing us to be heard. He didn't have to, and other Prime Ministers have chosen not to. For that, Prime Minister, we are greatful.

I yield.

Edison Turner,
Leader of the LWP.

MessageMr. Speaker,

Once again, I wish to reiterate my previous commendations of Mr. Turner's record and his efforts to lift the working class in this country. Though the HDU and the Worker's Party have not always seen eye-to-eye on many issues, there remains certain bright spots where we can compromise. The HDU is willing to move to the center on certain economic issues, but will first assess the pending report by the Finance Minister on recommendations for further action before moving forward.

Now, I do believe we have drifted far from our intended discussion of foreign policy. Do any other members have questions? If not, I will proceed to end debate in due time.

I yield.
