Bill: Retirement Act (2181)

Details

Submitted by[?]: Deltarian Nationalist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2183

Description[?]:

The retirement age should be raised as life expectancy has been growing over the decades yet the retirement age has remained the same. There are many advantages to raising the age such as increased revenue from continued income tax, pension schemes (public and private) would have more money paid into them which would result in more security in the pension system, pension firms would have more money paid into them so would have more to invest in the stock market so would therefore help the economy and also when the citizen retires there pension should (on average) be worth more. Raising the retirement age would not prevent those who can afford to retire from doing so early and would not prevent those who wish to continue to work for whatever reason from continuing to do so, this is merely the age at which citizens shall start to reciev state pensions (Whether or not they are legislated for at the time.)

MessageDisagree. Though we would accept that should an individual not wish to retire at age 65 they should be free to continue working, however there is more to life than work. As many of our population began full-time employment between the ages of 18 - 21 (school leaving age to end of 3year university course) than the average citizen has worked between 44 and 47 years, almost 2/3rds of their entire life until that point and so should be allowed, should they wish it, to have some time for themselves.
We would also point out that people aged 50+ start to become more susceptible to illness and could end up costing the economy more as we force them to continue working later in life. There is also the point that increasing the retirement age increases the number of workers available decreasing the jobs - workers ratio and so decreasing overall wages, or if nothing else, increasing unemployment.
