Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

This government believes in the free marketplace and is against unnecessary government intervention in people's lives. However, without a proper framework for certain things, such as housing, we risk leaving the most vulnerable exploited and without safety. The Interior Ministry proposes to have treats and landlords negotiate any further rent increases in an orderly way to ensure social stability and cooperation.

MessageMr Speaker,

the GNP will not support this bill - the problem with rent control is not how to find a proper way of imposing it, but its universally negative economic effects such as depressing supply and leading people to shy away from investing in real estate. We commend our coalition partners for their concern over rent levels, as this is an issue that is of great relevance for many working families, but we nevertheless believe that the proposed measure would hurt the very same people it seeks to help.
