Details

Submitted by[?]: Patriotic Party of Baltusia

Status[?]: passed

Voting deadline: June 4163

Description[?]:

The Culture of Baltusia

Baltusia is a multi-cultural, ethnically diverse and open nation, similar in culture (although not economically or militarily) in many ways to the United States of America of the late 20th and early 21st century. The major difference being that in this scenario Canrillaise (French) influence has remained much more prominent in certain states.

While Spanish (Egelian), English (Luthorian) and French (Canrillaise) influences once vied in equal measure to be culturally dominant, it is accepted that English (Luthorian) culture - particularly language - has become more prominent. This in some way reflects that Luthorian is generally taken to be the language of government, the legal system and business. However, Spanish (Egelian) and Canrillaise (French) continue to play a major role. Caillean (Catalan) culture grew strong where Egelian and Canrillaise populations first overlapped and has become a proud and distinct culture in its own right.

Immigration over the last decades of the 40th and early years of the 41st century has seen an influx of other nationalities and cultures make Baltusia its home, meaning a wide array of cultures, languages and names are available for players to pick from, giving Baltusia a CULTURALLY OPEN feel in game terms.

CULTURAL HISTORY

The native tribes of Baltusia - the Orinco, and the Mashacara - date back millennia. Culturally they are similar in belief, customs and languages to the native tribes of the Amazon, North American and the early Incan and Mayan civilisations.

In this day and age they mostly live in Terrarokka in, or on, the fringes of the equatorial forests that are abundant in that state following the upheavals of the great conquests (see below). They still adopt their own set of cultures which are based around their traditions dating back thousands of years. Most of these tribes have now been fully integrated into Baltusian modern society although often are perceived as "second class" citizens by many from the more dominant cultures that inhabit the country. Native Baltusian names can be based on Native American/ NativeCanadian/Mayan/Incan etc.

The Egelian (Spanish) conquest of the land now known as Baltusia began two millennia ago first through landings in modern day Athosia (near to Costo De Oro) and later overland from the south (Tukarali and Gaduridos). Native tribes put up strong resistance but were pushed further and further north and west into the rain forest landscapes in and around Terrarokka. The first Augustan capital was established at Costo De Oro but later was moved to Villita to take advantage of and administer the gold and other precious mineral mining taking place in the western mountains of Albiland.

The Luthorian (English) population originally settled in the state of Lindar Valley after originally migrating from Likatonia and Lodamun after fleeing persecution from their homelands in the Holy Luthori Empire. From there they spread to Gevaro and later as they expanded they clashed heavily with Egelian settlers and a series of inconclusive wars were fought. Some decades later, Canrillaise settlers, fleeing persecution in Alduria in southern Seleya also arrived in Baltusia by sea. Squeezed on both sides the Egelian dominance of Baltusia was broken and for many centuries the three different cultures vied for control.

After another bloody conflict Luthorians came to dominate for around two centuries with many Egelians being enslaved - alongside the native Baltusians - and forced to carry out work in the gold and silver mines under slave like conditions. However, by the early 2,400s the anti-slavery act was established, the social hierarchy abolished and the modern day republic of Baltusia started to take shape based on the system first pioneered in Likatonia (America).

The multi-cultural nature of Baltusia was further cemented with the arrival of immigrants from a variety of countries and backgrounds over the next 400 years although Luthorian, Egelian and Canrillaise continued to be the predominant ethnicities with the emerging Caillean culture also growing.

In the last 150 years a series of events has seen Luthorian culture once again take a more prominent role. Luthorian was adopted as the primary language of the courts and the legislative body (or Congress) while the civil war of 4086 saw many Egelian speaking families - who opposed the right wing government - flee south to Tukarali to start a new life.

Recent events have seen a influx of tens of thousands of Dundorfians (Germans) to Baltusia following an open borders treaty with that country and from neighbouring Valruzia (Poland).

MessageSo this is the rough draft which sets out some cultural guidelines but allows us to stay pretty culturally open. It blends the information the Pro Life Communist Alliance compiled some time ago with an update of the last few hundreds years.

Let me know if anyone wants to change anything as I can edit the text.

MessageBut is very different. I have no really any problem with the section concerning religions. Except that there is a different between having no religion and between atheist. And you think the changes are we way too massive. Of course I would like to preserve what made Baltusia Very unique, Having four different culture.

So about this : (th

MessageI am happy with that if everyone else is. I was basing my statistics on the last census we carried out and the fact that things have moved on 250 years since your protocols were set out - think of how much any country has changed in 250 years and you will see how different things can be. But as I say happy with the comments if everyone else is.

MessageIt is truth that there 250 years between now and the last cultural protocol, but Baltusia was never based on USA, Canada was a better exemple, even if any.

I have a suggestion for cultural background

Augustan (Spanish) 21%
Luthorian (English) 35%
Canrillaise (French) 20%
Alorians (Catalan)12%
Dunfordian (German) 5%
Native Languages 4%
Other less then 2%

Demographics:

Baltusian Luthorian 28%
Baltusian Augostan 18%
Baltusian Canrillaise 16%
Baltusian Dunfordian 2%
Bultasian Alorian 12%
Native Baltusian (Native American/Incan/Mayan) 4%
Luthoran 7%
Canrillaise 4%
Augustan 3%
Indralan (Chinese/Japanese) 1%
Dundorfian (German) 3%
Others 1%

I Yeah, A nation can change much between years, but we never have a history allowing such reduction in Catalan and Canrillaises speaker, I don't remember a rp being set to explain this, I believe Baltusia was taken for copy of USA before.
So, I make this suggestion, this would preserve the Multi-cultural background of Baltusia, This Would affirm a majority of Luthoran, which explaibn why the Luthoran church is larger then the patriarcal and this include dunfordians.
And lastly, this nation was spanish prior from being english, so I felt that hispanic was not correct. As Hispanic is US emmigrate there from other countries, but your don't immigrate in your own country.

MessageI Can understand if players want to Baltusia to be an English nation, as in their playtimes, they have always play baltusia like This, while when I started to play in Baltusia, it was majority Spanish. And evolved from that to bilingual, then trilingual and finally multi-cultural with four languages.

I strong would like to defend that culture, it was the only one of its kind and even region had their own cultural protocols, Hoverer I do admit abusing cultural openness in order to use my own personnal language in game. I even question a moderator about such a right. So note that there is nothing wrong with being open, it has advantages.

MessageOOC: Well you English is far better than my French so I am glad we are having this conversation in English, my friend!

Anyway I understand your point on the unique culture - let me tweak the figures based on what you said and put this to a vote - just to see if players are happy with this as an informal cultural guideline. Once that is established we can look at developing the cultural make up of each different state and then finally have another vote to see if people want to adopt this as a formal cultural protocol.

Thanks

MessageOk, this is the tweaked version of the informal cultural guidelines taking into account all the data available and comments above.

This is not a formal cultural protocol per se but will help as a general background to RP situations going forward. I have developed a historical narrative to try and best suggest how the four dominant cultures co-exist and came together, why Luthorian has become more dominant recently, particularly in terms of language, and how the native indians still have a role - all be it smaller one- to play in modern day Baltusia.

If it is passed I will pin it to the RP Useful Bills so that people can easily refer to it in the future.

Thanks!

MessageWell. it is more acceptable. But I do hope that the luthorian population will not keep increasing, I do believe English is now where spanish was in the days.
Actually, the (catalan population) came from Alorian, after agreement between the two government, Aloria having choose to expulse them.

MessageOOC - Well, the growing hegemony of the Luthorian population versus the others should create some friction and, of course, good RP situations for us.

Can you post me the link to the Alorian (Catalan) population deal that could be easily integrated or used to embellish the historical narrative. Thanks very much.
