| Message | Well, I would ask the congressman from the progressives to provide evidence that weed is 'harmless'. Last time weed was legalised, job absences increased and cannabis related hospital visits increased. This puts not only a strain on our private sector and those companies, but presses our health service when cannabis users could potentially be prevented from costing the health system by banning the drug in the first place. | Message | Mr. Speaker, Few substances are guaranteed to always be entirely harmless, and I would never make such a claim for cannabis. However, what is clear is that by legalising cannabis we can make it significantly safer, since if we legalise it, we can regulate it to reduce THC levels and ensure harmful impurities are not included in the product. Legalising cannabis will also mean we can tax it, raising money for healthcare and other important public projects. In addition, if cannabis is legalised, those who use cannabis will not be classified as criminals, so it will likely be easier for them to come forward and seek appropriate support for any problems they are having. Similarly, if cannabis is legal, we can ensure it comes with information enclosed with the product, informing users on what the risks are and how to use the substance responsibly.
