MessageMr. Speaker,

As protectionism once again rears its brutish head, I am compelled to speak out against it not only as the Minister of Finance of this government, but as a proud native of Shippington, Geharon, born and raised.

Restrictions on trade of all kinds, such as tariffs, quotas, and customs duties, would lead to a trade war with those countries with whom Luthori has free trade agreements in place. That would disrupt business and trade ties criss-crossing Terra and would hurt, not help, both businesses and workers in all countries affected. Increased trade restrictions would also trigger other nations, even those not involved in free trade agreements, to raise their own restrictions to keep their own native businesses competitive, in addition to political pressure. This is a lose-lose situation that will increase inefficiency, raise costs of all goods, disrupt business practices, and do very little to bring back jobs that have been lost.

I am a proud product of Shippington, having grown up in the port city my entire life. My grandfather was a dockworker, and I remember seeing him on the pier next to giant freighters carrying goods from nations as close as Aloria and Rutania to as far away as Rildanor and Saridan. I continue to see first hand the international trade and commerce going on not just between Luthori and the six other nations it has free trade agreements in place with, but with nations spanning the globe as well (OOC: Ministry of Trade and Industry: http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=496737). Most recently, our trade agreement with Istalia has created new jobs in both nations and has led to new investment by major Istalian companies throughout Luthori. Istalian goods which previously could not enter our market due to tariffs are now available for purchase at much lower costs. We all stand to benefit from free trade, and it is the policy of United Luthori to support free trade.

Now, I understand that workers involved in the manufacturing industry, in particular, have seen layoffs, pay cuts, and slashed hours. It is imperative that the government find a solution to provide these workers with the support and training they need to adapt to the new economy. That is why this government will be opening debate on new legislation to address this issue and to assist workers in retraining for employment in new fields, and I encourage all members of this body to contribute their own thoughts.

I yield.

Rt Hon. Nicola Sweeney MD
Minister of Finance
United Luthori (Shippington South)
