It is absolutely right that we should welcome immigrants who bring in skills we need and fill up vacancies we need to be filled up. It is also absolutely right that those who are genuinely experiencing persecution or suffering should be welcome to our shores as refugees. However, we need to be serious about the fact that, at a time of recession, insecurity and hardship, the Trigunian people want assurances that they are not getting a bad deal out of immigration and that our generosity is not being taken advantage of.
