MessageThe BPP is committed to personal liberty, privacy and civil rights. We believe that these help to ensure that individuals are able to exercise their own choices and that the state acts fairly. As a party, which respects the rule of law, we know how important it is to ensure civil liberties are protected. In order to achieve this, we will oppose any repeal of, or amendment to, current laws regarding the citizen's right to assemble in public. Similarly, we utterly reject any suggestion that the use of torture be legalised under any circumstances (even in the event of a national crisis).

Upon the topic of policing powers, whilst we believe that the routine arming of police officers reduces the threat from terror and domestic threats, we do believe that there is a correct time and place for armed response specialist officers. It is not reasonable nor proportionate for those officers to undertake routine duties in supermarkets, high streets or on people's doorsteps. It is BPP policy that the use of live rounds should be kept to an absolute minimum, after all other avenues of negotiation have been exhausted (including non-lethal weaponry). Similarly, we do not feel the use of live rounds should be part of the Police Service's routine response to non-lethal situations, as such, heavy 'military-grade' armouries should only become available for dealing with emergency situations where the risk to life is too great.

Random fact: By default the head of government is the ultimate authority within a national government. In general terms, heads of government are expected to consult with cabinet colleagues (including those from other parties) before making significant decisions but they remain responsible for government action.
