Bill: Essential Services Act of November 2188
Details
Submitted by[?]: Proletariat Revolution Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: July 2190
Description[?]:
While employees who are facing unfair work conditions, inadequate wages (ie: those which don't adjust according to the rate of inflation), benefits (which may be strip back due to 'budget issues') and hours, may pursue strike action should negotiations fail, it is unfair to the remainder of the nation to come to a halt because an essential service has been stripped back. Non-essential services can freely strike, but, service such as firefighting, ambulance, police, healthcare, educational professionals, transit workers, et certa are important to the foundation of Likatonia's social infrastructure. These and others classified as essential could still be permitted to strike, but only on the condition that they provide a minimal level of service. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change The workers' right to strike.
Old value:: All workers have the right to strike.
Current: All workers have the right to strike.
Proposed: All workers have the right to strike but certain categories of workers regarded as critical to society have to ensure a minimal service.

Message | AM RLP supports the right of free trade, which includes the right to refrain from trading. As all the workers have to offer on the marketplace is labor, it is unjust to force them to sell it. |

Message | While we understand the reasoning behind this as 'sound', we cannot support. It is the responsibility of the employers to make sure the workforce is sufficiently happy and make provisions for services to continue if the workforce choose to withdraw their labour. |

Message | (playing the devil's advocate) However, even if they offer a good contract, people are still greedy assholes. Oh and... so... firefighting is now a trade?! (/sarcasm) |

Message | I think the important modifier here, is 'critical'. One way or another, we MUST have our streets policed... no matter if the police Union calls for industrial action or not. Either the Unions have to accept a MINIMAL service level in CRITICAL areas, or we have to change the law so that our Armed Forces, for example, can replace them during their strikes. |

Message | We would gladly support the AM AAP's suggestion to allow the military to replace truly essential services during a work stoppage, if replacement workers could not be hired. |
