MessageThe CDR/LDA will abstain on this vote. Whilst we are naturally in favour of permitting gender reassignment surgery, we must query the regulation phrase within the clause. If the EFP were to provide greater detail to what extent these regulations would cover then we would be able to make a more informed decision, that may or may not swing us one way or another to the point where we would vote for or against this bill.

It would be our opinion to give local governments authority over the matter of regulation and funding. It will mean that they can look at the costs of regulating and funding the surgery, and create a policy that works for them based upon their socioeconomic circumstances. However, we believe that the National Government should also guarantee that local governments cannot by law make gender reassignment surgery illegal.
