Message | Right, breakdown of our feelings on this: Trade unions are a must, no question about it. But whether workers must be a member or not is different. They should as it will give them 100% protection. If a person would opt out, they would not have the union behind them, and therefore could lose out. It is a way of giving the person more choice over what they do, but would they see sense and continue to be a member of one? |

Message | To answer the question from the Socialists: absolutely. Union strength can remain high even with voluntary union membership. For example, Sweden has 87% union density (the percentage of eligible workers who are union members). This is because the government provides enough power in union hands to entice most workers to join. The reason to make membership voluntary is that some workers may not wish to participate in strikes or other union activities that could endanger their employment. As long as proper power lies with labor there is no threat to its strength or solidarity. It is more important to have solidarity within an activist group (such as a union) than within the body it works (a company). |

Message | Are workers forced to do anything though? They are free people and can always say no to strikes surely? The Union is there to make the work better, and with current pay (enough to support a standard family) there is no reason to strike except for better conditions. |
