Message | Can any party give a single, rational reason why the current law is in place? The only "argument" I've heard is from the Rev Socs who claim that this prevents small farms from being overwhelmed by corporate producers. This is faulty on two levels: firstly, if the small farm is overwhelmed, it will be either because their production methods are not as efficient or they willingly sold their famr to the corporation; secondly, the current law *forces* small farms to become big farms. What's the difference between a small farm being forced out of competition by a corporation and being forced to merge by the government? Either way, the original landholder loses full control of what used to be his farm. |

Message | 'their production methods are not as efficient ' - yes, which is why we need to keep subsidising small agricultural businesses. 'the current law *forces* small farms to become big farms' - It is 'encouragement' I see in this particular legislation, nice scaremongering there. Encoruagement allows samll farming communities to work together to be a business controlled by themselves - a workers control farm, so to speak. |

Message | "which is why we need to keep subsidising small agricultural businesses" That doesn't make sense. You want to support businesses which are inferior? "Encoruagement allows samll farming communities to work together to be a business controlled by themselves - a workers control farm, so to speak." But don't small farmers already own their own farm? |
