Message | We believe whaling should come under the auspices of hunting & fishing legislation as well as endangered species legislation. We fail to see why whales need special protections beyond those measures. Not all whales are endangered. Considering the amounts of whaling for scientific purposes, we don't believe the maintenance of ecological integrity is compromised. On the contrary, these scientific endeavors can tell us a lot about what actually needs to be done to maintain ecological integrity. We may be able to discover that controlling the population of certain species of whales that are not endangered may leave more room in the biosphere for endangered whales to flourish and recover. We stand to learn about feeding ecology, environmental pollution, and stock structure. This bill also threatens to put good, hard-working men out of work. This is an endeavor that has been with Solentia nearly 200 years, with back and forth legislation throughout earlier history. |
