Bill: Republican Constitutional Reform Bill

Details

Submitted by[?]: Zhtál-Merlkai Tjarziprta

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 4352

Description[?]:

With an increase in the number of liberal-minded parties in the country I wish to test the water in regards to where people stand on the issue of republicanism.

It is our belief that the hereditary head of state should be replaced by a democratically-elected president, or failing that a semi-presidential system be established.

The current monarch, Juhn, IX like many of his predecessors is an autocrat who has even used the royal veto during his reign to overturn a government decision; his family are a sponsor of one of the parties in this nation (the Greater Nationalist Party) and, as such, his ability to remain neutral and be a guardian of the constitution - or a constitutional monarch - is also compromised.

We do not believe this is right, people are not able to hold the monarch to account and it is why I advocate much-needed change.

MessageMr. Speaker,

Why are the conservatives against the monarchy? Isn't being conservative about conserving the cultural traditions of the nation?

MessageMr. Speaker,

Would the conservatives also be asked to uphold traditions such as slavery, feudalism or public executions. Simply because something has been done in the past, does not mean it is a valuable cultural tradition. The conservative party stands for a Vanukean Republic, where Vanukean traditional values are still upheld.

MessageRekvansé Prta shows itself to be a friend of democracy. A monarchy is a revenant of the past and that’s where it should stay, the past. We are glad to see that we have like-minded colleagues.

MessageMr Speaker,

Both parties make very good points. The monarchy is an unwanted relic and we ought not hold onto it simply for tradition's sake or for the sake of a few aristocratic politicians whose livelihood depends on it.
The people have voted with their feet by stripping the pro-monarchist Jezhrje Knstatak Prta (Greater Nationalist Party) of the vast majority of their seats over the last few elections.
We respect people when they vote on the issues that mean the most to them like religion, local or central government and the military and listen to what they are telling us. And we must respect them when they say they want the democratic right to choose their leader!

So, it is now time to change the system so we can vote in a popular leader who best represents the system and its people and can restore credibility to this nation.
Whichever way this vote goes the king must see how unpopular he is. So we say this to him: for god's sake do the right thing - abdicate.
