MessageSenators,

In many instances we find that torture, corporal punishment, and the death penalty have their essential uses in maintaining the security of the Selucian state. If anything, we should show less mercy to those who dare break out laws - not more.

MessageSenators,

As the one who introduced the bill that incorporated corporal punishment in our legal system I remain thoroughly opposed to this attempt at subverting our laws. I recommend that the Party for Humanity and Socialism read the text of the Oppidian Law on Punishments (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=563675). They will see that, while it appears barbaric to have caning as a punishment for crime, the law is explicit in making caning purely voluntary. The Republican Party continues to support this system because we firmly believe that it is far more humane and tolerant than filling our prisons with petty criminals and depriving them of liberty against their will. We find incarceration to be cruel and a form of torture, and so do hundreds of thousands of Selucians who, since the adoption of corporal punishment, have preferred to be caned rather than spend months or years in prison.

As for the death penalty, we are committed to the idea that some people make themselves unworthy of life through their own actions. Torturers, rapists, and murderers deserve the guillotine.

We do however support the elimination of torture. It is a form of arbitrary domination that does not result in any practical or moral benefit for anyone.
