Message | Mr. Speaker, I ask for the attention of my friends and colleagues in this esteemed Parliament as I rise to talk about a matter of both liberty and national security. Currently this great nation bans missionaries from foreign religions to enter Hutori. If such a ban is successful, it undoubtedly infringes on the rights of the people to worship as they please. The New Liberals care deeply about freedom: the freedom of speech, the freedom to assemble, the freedom of the press, and - of course - the freedom of religion. Therefore, we cannot support any religious legislation that would privilege one religion over another even if it privileges native Hutori religious practices over those our citizens might want to practice from abroad. However, I have serious doubts that the current policy is even successful at achieving its goals! If a missionary were to cross our borders, or enter one of our ports, or go through customs at one of our airports he would not volunteer the true purpose of his visit, knowing of our nation's ban on such activities! Fear of government reprisal has never been a good deterrent for zealots who only want to spread their faith and become martyrs. Instead, the New Liberals propose a new policy - allowing foreign missionaries, but requiring them to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Doing so will allow our intelligence services to ensure the missionaries are following our laws. It will also allow the Ministry to watch out for any behavior that could disturb the peace, while ensuring that Hutorians who want to practice religions native to other nations do not have their freedoms curtailed by a ban on some religions. We hope for both national security and liberty reasons, that our colleagues and friends from all parties will support this bill.
