MessageSenators,

We would support some of these proposals, except for the ban on abortions. Children born out of unwanted pregnancies are far more likely to become criminals and unwilling parents themselves, which is a cycle we must end. We do believe however that the number of abortions is far too great, which is why we propose to make high quality sexual education for all citizens a priority for the Republic.

MessageMinister Laelia,

This bill does not propose to ban abortions, but rather to restrict abortions to medical emergencies. This policy will encourage sexual responsibility, and will stop the murder of babies. It is my parties strong belief that these children be given a chance to live. However, we do believe that, if the mother's life is at risk, then an abortion should be legal.

MessageSenators,

Excessive restriction of abortion has the same result as pornography: it entrenches existing social castes, in both of these cases the hierarchy of men and women, and thus undermines virtue and the common good by setting one caste above another on the basis of biology. Turning women's reproductive functions into something for the use and control of others creates a caste, as does pornography which also turns women's sexuality into a something under the control of others. We thus oppose restricting access to abortion, just as we oppose the legalization of pornography.

MessageMinister Laelia,

You know what else restrictions on abortions do? They save babies lives. Abortion without necessary cause results in the death of innocent children. Tell me, minister, do you like to kill babies?

MessageRestricting abortion doesn't lead to fewer abortions. It leads to less safe illegal abortions.

And who is to say that unborn babies have an inherent right to life? Or for that matter, who is to say that anyone has any inherent right? It is rather the political process, when engaged freely and openly by virtuous citizens in a virtuous Republic, that determines the rights and freedoms any citizen may have. There are no pre-political rights because rights are inherently political.

MessageWho is to say? Who is to say? Everyone has a right to life. If I went and shot someone, I would be punished, correct? If a pregnant woman murders her unborn baby, does she get punished? The answer is no, no she does not. Regarding illegal abortions, they can be prevented. We need to educate the public about the evils of abortion, and teach them how to have safe sex, so that unwanted pregnancies don't happen in the first place. Restricting abortion saves lives, and encourages sexual responsibility and morality.

MessageSenators,

If Mr. Flavius goes out and shoots someone, he will be punished because he breaks the laws of the community of which he is a part, because no community can properly function without inflicting punishments for murder. Rights do not exist in the abstract, even "fundamental" rights like the right to life. To think that anyone can have an absolute claim to this or that right ignores the fact that rights rely on the support of others for their enforcement, that rights naturally clash with one another and with the well being of the Republic as a whole, and even assuming an objective standpoint for judging the legitimacy of one right or another, it still stands that these rights are ultimately the result of and not the basis of politics. No pre-political abstract reasoning or appeal to nature or religion or the "social contract" can objectively settle these disputes. To insist on individual rights without concern of how these rights affect the community and the solidarity required to maintain it is a form of corruption, a repudiation of the common good and the very conditions that make these rights possible in the first place. It is selfish and morally repugnant to stake a claim to certain rights without concern for the corresponding duties and the impact these rights have on the common good.

So then we ask, what is the benefit the community gains from restricting abortion? Rhetoric about dead babies aside, the result is more criminals, more unwanted pregnancies, more illegal and dangerous abortions, and the subordination of women's reproductive functions to the abstract "rights" claims of others. Mr. Flavius shows himself naive when he claims that, with a little education, desperate people in desperate circumstances will act morally. He rather subdues the well being of the whole Republic to the "right" to life of some individuals that are not even members of the community to begin with.

However, against our better judgement, we will vote in favor of this bill. We absolutely agree that Selucians are perfectly capable of buying their own condoms, that to provide them for free is patronizing and ultimately a form of servilism. The poor can very much afford their own contraceptives without the government or the companies shoving them down their throats. What we would prefer instead is a complete and total ban on all contraceptives, including condoms, the pill, abortion, and the entire panoply of family planning systems, but exclusively for the rich. Only then will we finally see true justice in the Republic.

MessageFactio Republicana and the rest of the parties seems to ignore the fact that, specially condoms, are used to avoid sexual illnesses, and not just as a form of avoiding to have children. But that is not the interest of the conservatives, for who “protection of life” is above everything else.

MessageLife and Liberty are the foremost of right, all other rights are subordinate to these. When other rights conflict with these two, then they shall be overruled. The life of children is far more important than women's reproductive rights. Abortions are the result of people partaking in irresponsible sex, both male and female. We cannot stop people from having sex, but we can prevent unwanted pregnancies. If you don't want a baby, don't have unprotected sex.
