| Message | Senators, Paramilitaries are too much a threat to the rule of law to be allowed to exist. When paramilitaries were legalized, it was meant to refer exclusively to the Auxilia forces open to the service of foreigners as a prerequisite for the grant of citizenship, but unfortunately a loophole seems to have been created and other paramilitary forces have emerged. | Message | Senators, Princeps Adrada makes a very valid point. Paramilitaries have a very unpleasant history in Selucia and were often used to subvert the rule of law, even when under strict government control. We feel that auxiliary military units like the Republican Guard, the Auxilia, or the border guards can function very well without the need to legalize paramilitaries, particularly if these paramilitaries may find themselves openly or tacitly affiliated with a political faction. | Message | I have absolutely no doubt that the Rexist Party's paramilitary has been respecting Selucian laws, and I am not making any accusations against any current party represented in our Senate. Our concern is rather that, by establishing quasi-military forces aligned with particular interest groups, this will undermine the rule of law and the universal application of Selucian legislation. The risk that paramilitaries will place the interests of their particular faction above the common interest of the Republic is not only likely, it is guaranteed. What we fear is that by granting military powers to specific interest groups the natural conflict between them will move from the civil sphere and risk to become a military confrontation. | Message | Senatrix Malwé, I do subscribe to some of your doubts about paramilitaries. However, I propose that rather than banning them entirely, we allow them to exist, but with no arms to be supplied to personnel of these paramilitaries. I believe this would ensure that paramilitary groups are used only, like the Legio Vallonicam, to give back to their communities and help with special situations like natural disaster relief.
