Bill: Software Patent Reform

Details

Submitted by[?]: Progressive Socialist Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: October 4399

Description[?]:

In current law it is possible to patent certain software. While this seems harmless at first glance, this has far-reaching consequences. Patents are supposed to protect innovativeness, yet that is not what it does now.

The main problem is that we’re granting far too many software patents, tying up vast swathes of industry in litigation and negotiation rather than innovation. In the thriving digital sector of Lodamun, patents don’t work at all, and more patents are likely to cause more litigation rather than more innovation. This we must change, as it is an undue burden on our legal system and our capacity to keep innovating.

Therefore the Progressive Socialist Party proposes this reform

MessageMr. Speaker,

The Liberal Party will always stand up for the right of people to their intellectual properties. If you made it, you own it. This goes for software as well as for any other kinds of ideas people come up with. If you have a great idea for new software, someone else should not be able to use your idea without your consent. We have patent laws for this very reason, let’s keep them.

Spokesperson Science and Technology, Liberal Party

MessageMr. Speaker,

Our current laws have a deficit one two points. Firstly it leaves us vulnerable to so-called 'patent trolls'. Patent trolls are companies who claim patents and sue people into oblivion for what they see as infringement. The problem with software patents, which is misused by these patent trolls, is that software patents are often vague and non-descriptive. this makes them prime targets for this misuse.

Secondly, the technology scheme in Lodamun, as in many countries of Terra, is obstructed by these patents. While the Progressive Socialist Party does agree with its colleagues that if you invented something that should be rewarded, we disagree on how this is done. The problem with these patents is that it keeps people from improving on standing technologies and in general obstructs innovation.

We hope on everyone's re-consideration,

Jacqueline Teller
PSP Spokesperson on Technology

MessageMr Speaker,

The Animal Liberation Front strongly agrees the views of the Liberal Party. We should defend the inventive minds of our nation. What if someone abroad patents a technology developed in Lodamun? Would they then be able to sue our hard working innovators?

The Animal Liberation Front will oppose the bill for that reason.

MessageMr. Speaker,

if patenting is made impossible in Lodamun, we should not care if anyone patents an invention abroad. We would not fall under such agreement. If we don't agree patenting, we should not respect patents. It would be quite contradictory to do so.
LNC has always been a bit isolationist. The last few decades, we are trying to improve relations with our neighbouring countries or with nations within Northern-Seleya. We suggest we focus on those agreements, or make seperate agreements with these nations instead of accepting international bullocks.

MessageMr. Speaker,

The LLP is proud of all the inventors and inventions that Lodamun brings forth. We wish to protect those inventions and invetors. According to the LLP this can be done with patents. Abolishing the patents on this field of expertise is not something we can support.

MessageMr. Speaker,

LNC is proud of the inventors and inventions that Lodamun brings forth. As Nationalists we claim these inventions should be used for the benefits of our nation, meaning we should use, combine and improve these inventions without reinventing them.
We agree on abolishing patents.
