Bill: Refugee Act of 2063

Details

Submitted by[?]: Proletariat Revolution Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: July 2065

Description[?]:

While we should try and help all those that need help, refugees can be a strain on the social welfare system. The taxpayers would like to see their money go to services that they use themselves.

This is not to discourage immigration, but, since it's obvious that there is a call for fiscal responsibility, we can't support all the refugees that come through official channels.

MessageNo. Refugees add to the culture of a nation and in developed nations fill jobs in understaffed areas of menial work.

MessageBut, we already have immigration as well, doesn not that add to the economy anc ultural diversity? (I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just asking).

MessageIf refugees are draining social welfare, then we should restrict social welfare. We shouldn't tell these people that we can't take them, just that we won't give them handouts if they come.

MessageBut in extreme situtations, the official channels likely WILL NOT be there... so, how will they be able to flee then?

MessageThe previous bill already allowed for that. Refugees from abroad can come here on a tourist visa and then apply for refugee status. All it requiredd was that refugees make their presence known to the Likatonian govt. They could even come here illegaly and then apply for refugee status if the situation in their home countries did not allow them to approach a Likatonian embassy for a visa.

MessageThis is to encourage a clean up of the refugee system so that those who are truly refugees can get in and not just those fleeing because they don't want to woe to their responsibilties. This will make it easier for those fleeing genocide, politicial oppression etc to get asylum and to make those who are not truly in danger apply through the official immigration channels.

MessageHow would we implement it - to determine who is fleeing from extreme circumstances?

MessageWe would actually support this on the grounds that frequently, during extreme circumstances, "official channels" are shut down and/or overwhelmed.

MessageEspecially since official channels are opened for regular immigration. So, doesn't refugee usually mean that the person is the victim of extreme circumstances?

Messagethe problem with these proposals is the shoddy wording. it doesnt stipulate how our immigration system works, so it is hard to know what falls under the category of refugee.

MessageI vote we should treat it like an immigration bill - and then make our borders fully open. That's one of the options.
