Message | Devin Patel, Minister for Science and Technology: Mr. Speaker, There is no doubt the internet is a transformative tool. It allows people and businesses to bridge barriers of distance and time and language to make connections that enhance our learning, enhance our understanding, and to boost our economy. But the fact is, relying solely on private providers means there are people who will be left behind. Their areas are too remote or their incomes too low to be of any interest to private providers. And that's where we would propose a public ISP. Not to try to drive private companies out of business- but to instead find a way to reach those who are left behind and to provide greater competitive forces to the marketplace. We can do both without putting unfair pressure on private businesses that have done so well expanding internet access in Talmoria. And we should do both- because it will benefit out country and its people more than leaving them behind ever will. |
