Description[?]:

To have an entirely Helathcare system is just a form to divide our society into those who can afford to pay more for their health and those left to their own merits and sacrifices in order to get the minimum.

A public healthcare system allows equality in our society, as it ensures everyone has access to basic service, essential for living standars. It also, in a long term, increases labour productivity as it brings a good health for the biggest amount of population. What's more, Healthcare is not a profit maximising industry, and doctors and nurses don’t need financial incentives to do a good job but are motivated by aims of patient care and job satisfaction.

With a complete private healthcare, those who can't afford it may underestimate the importance of going to doctor for a check-up, and this could lead to some diseases being left unchecked and becoming more serious and difficult to treat.

As final point, when health care is paid for by private insurance, there is actually less mechanism for evaluating the cost/benefit of different treatments. Doctors are happy to prescribe expensive treatments, which may do little to help because the bill is paid for by insurance companies. In the public sector, there is a discipline of sticking within budgets and rationing health care to where it is needed most.

We do, however, can accept the existence of private clinics, but regulated in a way that good and equal treatment is provided.

Artemisia Oltra,
Praetor of Insularia

MessageSenators,

Health insurance cooperatives are not for profit. They are run by their own members, and they provide affordable medical and healthcare without succumbing to the pressures of shareholders. We agree though that healthcare is better provided by one single large company, same as Praetor Oltra is proposing, but we believe such a company should be independent of the government. We suggest amending our current legislation on monopolies in order to permit a single national healthcare cooperative to emerge, with government support but no government interference.

MessageSenators,

This would have 10s of millions of SEN to our already to big health budget. As Minister of Health I would absolutely not support this.

Aetius Augustulus,
Minister of Health and Social Services
