MessageAll the points stablished in the treaty are already covered by other treaties. Why should we vote in favour?

MessageSenators,

This is a historic ancient treaty, established more than two millennia ago, and one of the longest-lasting alliances of Majatran nations. In addition to its historical value, this treaty allows us to cooperate with other Majatran nations in combating piracy while recognizing every nation's sovereignty and prohibiting involvement in their internal affairs. SOTO was once a cornerstone of Selucian foreign policy, and its headquarters still lies in Auroria. It was through SOTO that the Selucian navy fought and destroyed Majatran piracy centuries ago (https://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Pirate_War) when the continent was plagued by conflict and chaos. Since it seems that, unfortunately, a new era of chaos may be upon us, it is necessary to ensure that the conflicts on the other side of the Majatran Sea do not once again breed piracy and threaten our trade and supply routes.

MessageWe must remember that it was the Rexist Party, in agreement with Factio Republicana, the ones that decided to let chaos go on in Majatra, after deciding not to become involved in foreign affairs and meetings with the rest of the Majatran heads of government or State.

We have to think carefully about our decisive vote regarding this treaty as it is beneficial for our nation, but we are still deeply in disagreement with the foreign policy carried out during the last government, especially now entering in contradictions.

MessageOrator Ausculo,

I think you misunderstand why these policies were carried out. We carried them out to protect the national sovereignty of our great nation. Articles of this treaty include reassurances that the members of SOTO will respect each others sovereignty, and will not get involved in the foreign affairs of the other members. Therefore, this treaty safeguards the sovereignty of the Selucian Republic, and is NOT contradictory to the policies of the government in the last term.

MessageOrator Ausculo,

You have indeed misunderstood the previous administration's foreign policy. Our policy was not autarchy and complete and utter isolationism, but rather safeguarding popular sovereignty, a necessary precondition for democracy, and avoiding entanglements in proxy conflicts. SOTO will guarantee both those goals.

And of course, it is libelous to suggest that the previous administration "let chaos go on in Majatra". However proud we may be of our Republic, we must recognize we are not a superpower or the guardian of peace on Majatra. With or without our participation in the Romula Summit the conflict in Jelbania would have gone on. Selucia is not the most important nation in Majatra and we are not accountable for peace and war on the continent. Our policy was to avoid entanglement in great power conflicts, and thankfully, seeing the rapid deterioration of the Jelbanian situation, we were successful in that goal.

MessageIf you don’t fight injustices, you agree with them. Period. We still do not understand the withdrawal from the Antislavery treaty and the international sports treaties, and there is no democratic reasonable explanation for it.

Anyway, In Marea-Civis Sinistram will vote in favour of this treaty as a minor evil, in order to start planning solutions for the previous policies carried out.

MessageIndeed, but one must be proportional and rational when fighting injustice. Geopolitical power-struggles, military interventionism, and economic integration risk becoming an even greater injustice than those against which they are aimed.

We have made our opposition to international sporting events clear. They are a commercialized and commodified celebration of nationalistic pride and jingoism, and thus we welcome our withdrawal from these events. And as a matter of principle the Republican Party opposes enshrining fundamental rights and freedoms within international treaties or written constitutions. Rights exist only in so far as they derive from democratic deliberation through the political process, and they should not serve as limitations of deliberative citizenship.
