MessagePatents should only be effective for a limited time - say twenty years, although different areas of intellectual property require different lengths of time - but they permit the little company or individual to develop an idea on their own terms. Patents that are not used should expire sooner.

You invent a new battery that is powerful enough to run an automobile at highway speeds for a thousand kilometers and weighs only 100 kg. What is to stop Volvo, Mercedes, Ford, Toyota from making millions of dollars with your idea while you are left shivering in your garage laboratory (working on tires that never wear out and still have excellent traction)? A patent. Or a new compression method that doubles the speed of the internet without changing the infrastructure? What protects you from Microsoft, the phone companies - the defense industry? A patent.

MessageWhat I'm trying to say is that the large organizations, government or private, will profit - so it IS a profit thing.

MessageWe are talking about algorithms, that are not what MS makes. It makes implementations of algorithms, and this law not remove this aspects.
