| Message | Mr Speaker, Removing the Death Penalty from the sentencing code is a fundemental issue of both morality and practicality. Practicality the death Penalty costs more to carry out than a life sentence, as a result of multiple appeals, maintainence of equipment and extra staff burdens. It fails to serve as an adequate deterrent to violent crime, and is impossible to reverse once the sentence is carried out, whereas a life sentence for said crimes can be immediately ended and the accused compensated for the miscarriage of justice. It is also a fundemental moral issue, what right should the state have to kill it's own citizens? I hear many parties in this diet complain about the long arm of the state, complaining that the state is taking too much of their constituents money, or interfering in the free market, and yet they fail to utter a word about the state murdering it's own citizens to show how morally outraged it is at murder. | Message | Mr. Speaker, We see the compelling argument that the TUSC is making on this issue, and we understand their frustration. But, we do not believe that this is the correct reform. The death penalty is in place for the most violent crimes and saves the justice system money, as offenders would otherwise be using resources that could work to the greater benefit of other inmates, or the Luthorian people at large. Additionally, the death penalty option does provide some families with greater closure in matters of capital crimes. Overall, the death penalty should certainly not be used liberally, though it is ideal to allow the justice system to exercise this option if it is deemed appropriate. | Message | Mr Speaker, No evidence suggests that in any circumstances other than when a defendant refuses an appeal does the death penalty work out cheaper. | Message | Mr. Speaker, A strong justice system is based on elements of rehabilitation, that fact is clear, though we must understand that justice also works to ensure the safety and protection of society. Violent and volatile inmates within the Luthorian justice system consistently prove to be a threat to their peers, making prisons less safe. Having the death penalty available as a rare option not only acts as a deterrent to crime, it also gives the justice system all of the options necessary to protect society.
