MessageWe are a enlightened nation, that prides itself on scientific advancement and evidence based policy. It is therefore an anachronism and an oddity that we require the labelling of chemical and GM ingredients on food products.

There is simply no evidence, especially with our food safety standards, that chemical or GM ingredients pose any danger to anybody. It is important that government reflects scientific consensus, and it would attract investment in the food industry.

The New Liberal Alliance will present proposals to the Socialist government to remove the requirement for food products to specifically disclose chemical and GM ingredients.

MessageThe Socialist Party would be inclined to support this bill, if the authors removed the language about chemical ingredients from the description and added language that made disclosure of GM and other controversial ingredients voluntary. We believe that disclosure of chemicals used to produce food is important information for consumers to make intelligent choices in the marketplace. For example: Under the current language, there would be no requirement on food makers to label Monosodium Glutimate and Hydrogenated transfats used in production of their foods. We know that those products are cheap, but they are also incredibly unhealthy, and there IS science to back that up. Consumer awareness of those ingredients has led to consumer pressure to force food manufacturers to abandon those highly processed chemicals all together in their production, and turn to more natural ingredients.

Such a consumer outcry and a change in food manufacturing was possible because of labeling and consumer education. Sure, food manufacturers had to incur higher costs, but the result was better health for Kalistani citizens. We think consumers should know what they are eating.

Perhaps the solution is to stop thinking of GM crops as controversial.

What does the NLA Speaker think of this compromise?
