Message | The times are changing, and Kalistan must adapt. Although the New Liberal Alliance is supportive of the long-standing independent co-operative network of radio and television stations, Kalistan is missing out on a wide range of private opportunities. Private radio and television gives the people access to a wide range of international culture, entertainment and news. The NLA has therefore presented a proposal to the Socialist government regarding the opening of Kalistan's airwaves to private stations. Zandra Arnold Leader of the New Liberal Alliance |

Message | We oppose. Handing the National airwaves to private actors is yet another method of introducing capitalism into the society. The airwaves belong to all the People, and we are not sure why the NLA would limit the control over those airwaves to just a specific set of people. Further more, this actually increases the amount of government control over the airwaves, more than we have currently. TV and radio is not something the government does well, especially when it is not exclusively socialists drafting the message. We yield. |

Message | Furthermore, there is nothing preventing international culture, entertainment and news from being broadcast on Kalistani airwaves, except international media firms insisting that they be allowed to rip our people off by demanding profit for the privilege of monopoly. We will oppose this measure. |

Message | The NLA sees no reason why the proposal would introduce further government control, the independence of the co-operative run stations would be maintained. All the government would do is introduce subsidies to keep these stations competitive with private actors. The international media firms, in co-existance with what we have now, is the future of Kalistan's media. The NLA proposes that the bill be voted on as is. Message | We request more information. How will the people be repaid when we hand their airwaves, their property over to foreign media conglomerates? We only ask because we have a law in Kalistan, as the Leader is familiar with, concerning eminent domain. We cannot seize property without compensation. It is a hallmark of property rights. The airwaves belong to the people. But since they are public property, individuals cannot benefit from their sale. Either ALL the people benefit, materially, from the sale of their property, or no individual segment of that entire People do. We passed the law which handed the airwaves to the people. They pay for it, they maintain it, they consume it, and they program it. In all meaningful ways, the people actually own the airwaves. So, how does the Leader suggest we 1) repay the people for taking their airwaves and handing them over to private, and FOREIGN media control, and 2) How do we ensure that the voice of the people is what is heard over the airwaves rather than the voice of the investor? We would delay our vote until the Leader of the NLA offers us some insight. |
