Bill: Responsible Drinking Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Ducal Delegation
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 2201
Description[?]:
The current law prohibits youngsters from touching alcohol until they reach a certain age, and then allows them to consume as much as they want. This is a recipe for irresponsible binge drinking by teenagers/young adults. The solution is to allow children to grow up with alcohol, and learn to drink it moderately and sensibly. Letting children drink, say, a glass of wine over Sunday lunch once a week will do them no harm, and will teach them that alcohol can be enjoyed moderately. Making a substance taboo until a certain age is reached makes it more likely that they will 'rebel' and drink immoderately once they are old enough to purchase drink for themselves. Message | The new law appears to say that children of any age can buy alcohol. We are not sure whether this is what the Duke intends. |

Message | Whilst we would like to see young people enjoy alcohol in a more moderate way, we do not think that this law will truly achieve that. |

Message | and by young people, we mean the over 16's, although it wouldn't harm younger children if it was every week like the DD suggest. |
