Message | Senators, We strongly urge that all Senators vote against the proposed bill. What is fundamental to marriage is the idea that it is simply beyond the purview of the state: it is a private contract between two individuals; inviolable and sacred. The man is the king and his wife the queen of their marital home, and it is on that basis - the importance of family and particularly of marriage - that marriage must always remain sacrosanct and free from undue state interference. To make my point abundantly clear, Senators, let me put it like this: if you vote to relax the circumstances in which a partner may file for divorce, then you vote to destroy the institution of marriage, which is so fundamental to family life. And if you destroy the institution of marriage, then what do we have left? One thing is certain: our private lives shall not be so private, and bureaucracy and moral decay shall win the day. |

Message | Senators, We strongly oppose this bill and we are glad to see our coalition partners share our view. I must admit however that I find our allies' argument rather baffling. If the Optimates believe that marriage ought to be beyond the purview of the state as a strictly private contract, then would it not make more sense to remove restrictions on divorce? Arguably Senatrix Barba's proposal reduces the involvement of the state in marriage by limiting the amount of recognition the government grants marriages, and it is precisely because of this that we oppose this proposal. Instead we believe that society and the Republic has an interest in marital stability, that in addition to the "private" goods provided by marriage it also provides a public benefit, as it is a political institution in which virtues like altruism and self-sacrifice can flourish, virtues that are not only beneficial to the family unit itself, but also to the overall political and social system of the Republic. So for these reasons we have always defended all forms of marriage within our Republic, not just "traditional" opposite-sex monogamous marriage, but also polygamous, arranged, and same-sex marriage, all of which, in spite of their differences, share their role in promoting virtue and raising virtuous new citizens.
