Description[?]:

Hi folks. This is a discussion that I would be happy to have on discord, though I feel it's good to write out here to fully form my thoughts. After reading, feel free to leave comments here, or open a discussion on the discord.

A while ago (about a year now?) myself and the players at the time renamed about 35% of the cities in Indrala. I think we need to continue for a number of reasons.

(1) -zhou Cities

This was one of the catalysts for the original renaming; at the time around 90% of the cities were some form of syllable-zhou (i.e. Kaizhou, Beizhou, etc.). This obviously felt a bit repetitive, but also was strange in a Chinese language sense; the suffix -zhou means "province." In fact, you'll notice that the character ๅทž (zhou) used for our provinces is the same that is in the city of Guozhou, ๆžœๆดฒๅธ‚. Thus, it is odd that every province had the majority of its cities with this ending.

While it may make sense in some instances for the -zhou suffix to be used, I think it was and continues to be over used. Thus, I think it would be good to develop more creative names for the following cities which have very limited/no RP background:

(1.1) Jiaozhi
- Beizhou

(1.2) Anle
- Shuzhou (very odd, considering it's in Anle Province, but that the name translates directly to Shu Province...)

(1.3) Han
- Tianzhou
- Guozhou

(1.4) Min
- Mazhou
- Dongzhou (I recommend this one specifically be renamed Dongjing...)

(2) Weird Names

These are names which I feel are culturally/linguistically/geographically odd.

(2.1) Anle
- Dongjing (the name translates as "Eastern Capital" except that it is located in the west, and in a Province that has a different capital; plus this city has literally no RP history. Due to its geographic meaning, I think it would make sense to move it to Min)
- Shuzhou, again

(2.2) Shu
- Nandu (I just think it's an odd name that has more SE Asian connotations to me? Thoughts?)
- Beihei (Name translates as "North-river" I think, which doesn't make a lot of sense given where it is)

MessagePotential alternative names (though Chinese is not at all my strong suit):

(1) Guozhou, Han

(1.a) Guozhou = Donghai (literal: "east + sea," literary: "east of the sea")
- Name would reference that the city lays west of the South Indrala Sea
- Too many "Dong" cities?

(1.b) Guozhou = Qinghe (literal: "blue-green + river")
- Referencing the river that empties into the South Indrala Sea through Guozhou

(2) Nandu, Shu

(2.a) Nandu = Shankou (literal "mountain + port)
- idk

Message(1) Dongzhou, Min

(1.a) I agree with changing Dongzhou to Dongjing.

(2) Dongjing, Anle - Iโ€™d replace it with something to do with mountains or the sky

(2.a) Shandi

(2.b) Tianxin

(3) Beihei, Shu - I personally think Beihei is fine; it could be passed off as the North river of Shu, or the Beiyidom it was founded in.

(4) Guozhou, Han - To change it up you could always use -dong instead of dong-. If you look at a lot of provinces in China the location descriptor comes last (ie. Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, etc.)

(4.a) I think Iโ€™d lean towards Qinghe when it comes to the three options.

(5) Mazhou, Min

(5.a) Malai, as in lai = to come and ma = horse, and since itโ€™s inland during its founding horses would be the main transportation to and from. However, Malai may sound a bit more South East Asian.

(6) Nandu, Shu

(6.a) Xiangao = fragrant harbour

MessageMore random city names, just because:

(1) Meihua (ๆข…่Šฑ) - (literal: "plum blossom")
(2) Liangjiang (ไธคๆฑŸ) - (literal: "two + river," literary: "meeting of two rivers")
(3) Jincheng (้‡‘ๅŸŽ) - (literal: "gold + city")
(4) Yiyang (ไปช้˜ณ) - no meaning
(5) Tianhe (็”ฐๅ’Œ) - (literal: "field + harmonious," literary: "harmonious field")
(6) Muli (ๆœจๆŽ) - (literary: "plum tree")
(7) Fengshan (ๅ‡คๅฑฑ) - (literal: "phoenix + mountain")
(8) Hanji (้ŸฉๅŸบ) - no meaning
(9) Yetao (ๅ†ถ้™ถ) - (literary: "pottery furnace")
(10) Haibin (ๆตทๆปจ) - (literal: "seaside")
(11) Renchuan (ไปๅท) - (literary: "apricot plains")
(12) Datian (ๅคง็”ฐ) - (literal: "big + field")

MessageOOC: Whatever you two decide, I will vote in favour. Just keep in mind that some companies are named after these places. May want to avoid changing those (e.g. Kaizhou, Beizhou).

MessageYep, the big roleplayed cities were specifically not mentioned (ie. Kaizhou), as well as, provincial capitals (ie. Hazhou). I guess Beizhou could be discussed, it's there basically because it hasn't been rped very much.

MessageChanging (1) because the name is quite similar to Jugang, which is a city in that province. Instead:

(1) Beizhou -> Guitan (Turtle Beach)

MessageI really like (and agree with) a lot of these city name changes. It's time we actually get done with this city renaming. The only potential thing is the possibility of Longmen and Longgu sounding too similar, especially since, although they aren't in the same province they aren't to far off from each other.

MessageI think Longgu would definitely be a cool geographic feature, with a lot of possible culture/wildlife rp build up on it. But regarding Liangiang, I think it might be a bit strange since Beihei only currently has one river nearby.
