| Message | Alexandro Faccio, AV Party Leader: Mister Speaker, The national service gives young Istalians the opportunity to learn what responsibilities and liberties come with Istalian citizenship. By temporarily serving in either the army or civil service our youth can experience what its like to work hard for your money and take care of one another. Furthermore, it is important to remember that conscripts make up a big share of the military's human resources, as well as the labour force in areas such as healthcare and education. Therefore it would be unwise to suddenly put an halt to conscription as this decision would leave a giant labour demand that will not be filled easily. At last, I would like to discuss the point of conscientious objectors. How would one's objection to serve his or her country be rewarded with exemption from national service? To the AV, it seems clear that people who do object against serving in combatant roles should be given a chance to perform civilian national service instead of exempting them immedeately, which is also unfair to other conscripts. Thank you. |
