| Message | Mr/Madam Speaker, It is a complete travesty that, at present, abortions are not funded by the government unless in an emergency. As a distinct pro-choice Party, we absolutely support the right for women to have an abortion - not just in law, but in practice. The failure to fund abortions across the board is, in practice, a pro-life policy. It is also highly discriminatory and unfair towards low-income women and girls, meaning they are forced into having a child they do not want or cannot look after. The current policy also neglects funding those who have been raped (unless in a medical emergency which is a rarity), forcing them to have a child they had absolutely no control over conceiving... this is a complete disgrace. |
