| Verginian Law on Social Media Senators, For centuries the myth of social media as a magical tool of social interaction and democratic governance has been used to justify the massive growth of this technology, which occupies more and more of the free time of our citizens. But this myth is in sharp contradiction with the reality of social media, which is nothing but a cesspool of personal attacks, surveillance capitalism, paranoid indignation, and addictive online behaviors. Social media acts as a surrogate for the innate desire of humans to be with others, without however accomplishing much in fostering cooperation, but rather increasing loneliness. Social media causes addiction, spreads inaccurate information, substitutes genuine social interaction and political involvement, eliminates self-reflection through periods of genuine contemplative solitariness, and is so heavily commercialized that the vast majority of our citizens have been turned into mere products in the hands of large companies and advertisers.
