Bill: Tax proposals of February 4512

Details

Submitted by[?]: Kirlawan Popular Front 4.5K

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes to change income taxes. It requires more than half of the legislature to vote yes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: June 4513

Description[?]:

The Kirlawan Popular Front 4.5K propose to adjust the government's taxation policy to better address the economic situation of the Poblacht na Kirlawa (Republic of Kirlawa).

This results in Income Tax cuts for all earning between 200,001 and about 450,000 and tax rises for all those above. It would bring in about 10bn more, which combined with a surplus of about 55bn will pay for a cut in Corporation Tax with some contingency.

In future we would suggest any rises in spending come from applying a small sales tax.

MessageSorry, but we like the current tax schedule better.

There's a reason for the unusual-looking figure of 58% -- which is what KPJP set it to whenever we get the chance; it's the revenue-maximising rate for the corporate tax, the top of the Laffer curve.

As for the income tax, the current brackets are both neat and easy to calculate :)
(Admittedly, the proposal here is also, except for that 235k bracket.)

We are _extremely_ strongly opposed to any sales tax on essential goods.

MessageThe 235 bracket is to ensure that no taxpayer below the current 40% band sees an increase in taxes, but still we don't have to increase rates much for the higher bands.

While 58% may be the Laffer Curve peak and so most 'efficient' for government, it is too high for businesses. The reduction in revenue is lower than the current surplus.

We are concerned that the PJP want to preserve Kirlawa in aspic. But it is now considered a fourth rate nation.

MessageAlso, we have not proposed a general sales tax here, but will do so if we see a need for spending increases.

no doubt.

"But it is now considered a fourth rate nation."

Perhaps, by nations which treat their people poorly. But when given the choice between doing the right thing, versus caring what such nations might think of us, KPJP happen to choose the former, very decisively.

Meanwhile, we heartily applaud the (at the moment) 29 other nations who join Kirlawa in doing very much the right thing and not taxing essential goods.

MessagePlease don't get us wrong; we are not opposed to the two proposals in this particular bill. We like them. For that matter, we probably like them better than any past non-KPJP-proposed bills that we can recall on these two issues for many many years, maybe centuries.
However, we like the current schedule on both issues _even better yet_ -- the greater of the two goods.

By stark contrast,

"if we see a need for spending increases."

Whereas in KPJP's eyes, there is no such thing; no spending increase could be anywhere near so direly needed as to justify that; especially compared to other possibilities. Furthermore,

If forced to choose between spending cuts and a sales tax on essential goods, we would certainly choose the spending cuts, no matter what.

If forced to choose between a deficit and a sales tax on essential goods, we would certainly choose the deficit, no matter what.
