MessageMr. Speaker,

The laughable assertion by Mr. McCarthy that raising the minimum wage will have the effect of reducing poverty is misguided at best. It's simple economics when you artificially raise prices of any market good, including labor you also reduce the demand for said product. By raising the minimum wage it would cause an increase in unemployment, which means more poverty not less. Furthermore to reach a point where the maximum amount of people are sustainably employed requires that wages be maintained at market levels not at some artificially determined point.

Lastly this proposed minimum wage increase will necessarily increase the cost of living. By raising the base wage it also raises costs of essential goods which means that it will be more difficult for the impoverished to get access to necessary resources such as food clothing and shelter.

In the end this proposal is bad for the economy, the average citizen and most interestingly it negatively and disproportionately affects the poor.
