Bill: The Creation of the Solentian Geologic Survey

Details

Submitted by[?]: Right Wing Nationalist Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 4570

Description[?]:

1. The Bill creates the Solentian Geologic Survey to monitor, study and warn the public about the hazards of Volcanic Eruptions

2. This organization will get a 100 million start-up fund from the Science and Technology Fund The financial minister has given the Green light.

Here is the mission statement for the SGS.

The SGSstaff conduct research on many aspects of active volcanism, respond to dangerous volcanic activity in many parts of the Terra and maintain a close watch over volcanoes in Nord, Elsa and the rest of Solentia.
We would alert and educate public agencies, public officials, emergency response groups, the business community, educators, and concerned citizens.

SGS scientists study and monitor volcanoes then communicate to the public.
Scientists with a diversity of interests and expertise are needed to study the past history of volcanos, develop new tools and ideas to understand volcanic systems, monitor current volcano behavior, assess future impacts, and communicate with officials and people at risk. At SGS:

We Evaluate Volcano Hazards – Scientists examine and map volcanic landscapes to locate the areas that were impacted by volcanic processes in the past. Rocks, and sometimes charcoal, are sampled and dated to help determine the types and frequency of volcanic events. This information helps scientists anticipate future activity and can aid in reducing the risk posed by future eruptions through land-use and emergency planning

We Monitor Restless Volcanoes – Volcanoes often show signs that they are getting ready to erupt days to months in advance. Seismic activity, ground movements, and gas emissions at Solentian volcanoes are monitored by SGS in order to detect subtle changes that may herald the next eruption.

We Communicate Hazards and Preparedness Information – SGS provides information about volcanoes and volcano hazards to public officials, land-use planners, emergency response organizations, the Solentian Aviation Administration, Solentian Weather Service, and other federal agencies, the news media, schools, and the general public. When volcanic activity increases, SGS issues advisories, warnings, and, whenever possible, specific forecasts concerning eruptions and their potential impacts.

We Develop New Tools and Test New Ideas for Monitoring Volcanoes – SGS scientists study volcanoes to develop new ideas about how volcanoes work and to improve eruption-prediction methods. Related research topics include dynamics of debris flows, effects of volcanic gases on weather and climate, and effects of increased sediment transport on streams. New instrumentation, software, and hardware developed by the SGS enable scientists to acquire, process, and interpret data more quickly and effectively than ever before.

A very important piece too volcanoes are their danger to commercial airlines

As a Geologist put it

"Volcanic ash ejected into the atmosphere by explosive eruptions has known damaging effects on aircraft. Ash particles can abrade forward-facing surfaces, including windscreens, fuselage surfaces, and compressor fan blades. Ash contamination also can lead to failure of critical navigational and operational instruments. Moreover, the melting temperature of the glassy silicate material in an ash cloud is lower than combustion temperatures in modern jet engines; consequently, ash particles sucked into an engine can melt quickly and accumulate as re-solidified deposits in cooler parts, degrading engine performance even to the point of in-flight compressor stall and loss of thrust power".

We still do not have an agency that is specific for Volcanoes. We would be the leading country in all of Terra for Volcano research and we could save lives and prevent people from getting killed from future eruptions
