Message | Mr. Speaker, We sponsored and supported legislation that would make this change two years ago, and we will support this now. Women have the right to bodily autonomy, and we won't rest until the laws of Hutori represent the will of the Hutorian people on this issue. Message | Mr Speaker, If legalizing non-medical abortions was truly the will of the Hutorian people as the member opposite says, why did more than 61 percent of Hutorians vote for parties that are against it? Furthermore, a medical emergency, as the current law states, is defined under the Hutorian Healthcare Act as "a scenario where the mother is physically or mentally unable to carry the child to term, and it is too early in the pregnancy for the child to be able to survive being born." This covers any mental illness that would prevent a mother from being able to carry the child to term, any physical condition that makes the mother unable to carry the child to term, and any case where the child had been conceived as a result of the mother being raped. If a woman feels that she cannot take care of the child after birth, Hutori has a world class adoption system, that gives the mother the ability to still have contact with her child if she so chooses. There have been many studies that show that adopted children go on to live just as happy, healthy and normal of a life as any other child in this country. There is not a single other reason for a woman to have an abortion. Abortion cannot be used as a form of birth control, there are plenty of other ways to prevent a pregnancy before it starts, and under Hutorian law contraceptives are provided to citizens free of charge. Hon. MacKenzie Donnelly MP for Tremaine Wascana Minister of Foreign Affairs |
