MessageWe don't think we can rule everything, but there's a reason why there's one single government and we're not just a confederation of states. We keep ordinances and beliefs unified, because in that is a stronger nation. We're sure people can do "things" and we don't doubt there are people at the state level who are competant, but such things as the environment cross over state lines and therefore become matters of the central government.

Suppose one state that rests on a hill overlooking another state. That state decides, because like you said people can do things, to tear down the trees on that hill. Well, during the next heavy rain season the downfall from the rain will go into the neighboring state and cause massive flooding, creating damage to homes and infrastructure, as well as putting many people's lives in danger. We are not making this up, this is a real danger of deforesting and is a recorded and scientific fact.

If this were a smaller matter we would agree to give the states power, but this affects more than the local areas. We do not consider ourselves a "green" party by any means, but we like to think ourselves sensible when it comes to environmental matters.

MessageMassive floods because of deforestation? I am no expert, so I will take your word on it. With things like this, however, research is done to find out what will happen. If it will cause flood, I am guessing the deforestation will not happen. Furthermore, that state at the bottom of the hill will look up, see what is happenning and say "no." They are indipendand local governments, but they can talk.

MessageWe support the Centrist Democrats. Environmental responsibility is a global concern and central governments need to ensure the quality of the air and water. Central governments need to provide a forward-thinking environmental policy that will ensure the durability of ecosystems and of the quality of life that future generations will inherit from us here now. We cannot support this measure.
