Description[?]:

OVERVIEW
Aldegar is based on an alternative Iran in which the influence of Islam is greatly reduced. Similarly, Turkic and Arab aspects of the Iranian culture are far less prominent. Consequently, Aldegar can be accurately compared to Persia under the rule of the Sassanian, Samanid, Mongol empires or Safavid and Pahlavi dynasty. Without the influence of Islam, the in-game equivalent of Zoroastrianism, Yazdism, retains its status as the most popular faith.
Throughout this document, brackets are used to show the real-life equivalent of a people, language or religion.

BRIEF PRE-GAME HISTORY
The Ezadi (Iranian) people, who form the majority of the Aldegarian population today, are believed to have been the some of the first human inhabitants of central Seleya. In addition, they were the founders of Yazdism (Zoroastrianism) which continues to dominate in modern Aldegar. The Ezadi presided over vast empire on the continent at one time but Aldegar experienced foreign rule too. In particular, the Mu-Tze Khanate (Mongol Empire) controlled the area for half a millennium between 263 and 719 CE. During this period, many Mu-Tze natives emigrated to the region and even today, they remain a significant percentage of the population.
Later, Hosianism (Christianity) arrived in the region from Al’Badara; it is still the largest minority religion. Following the fall of the Mu-Tze Khanate, Aldegar was ruled predominantly as a ‘Shahdom’, i.e. a monarchy headed by a Shah. The First Republic was established in 2042 and since then, Aldegar has alternated between monarchy and republicanism.

ETHNICITY
»Ezadi (Iranian)- 77%
--Aldegarian (Persian)- 81%
--Bihezi (Kurdish)- 9%

The largest ethnic group in Aldegar is the Ezadi (Iranian) people. Formed primarily of the Aldegarian group and some other related peoples, they are the indigenous inhabitants of the region. The Mu-Tze people can be found throughout Seleya as a result of the extensive Mu-Tze Khanate mentioned above. They are found particularly in the north of Aldegar, Hikirena and Amuro.

The Majatran (Arab) and Cildanian (Assyria/Syriac) people both arrived, primarily, with the introduction of Hosianism (Christianty) in the Middle Ages. They are most commonly found in western Aldegar but have largely assimilated within the Hosian Aldgerian community. Nonetheless, some retain their language and culture.

Other ethnic groups, like the Ikpi (Aboriginal Australian), Caldorian (Scottish) and Gao-Showa people, are more recently arrivals from neighbouring or friendly nations.

The most common religion in Aldegar is Yazdism (Zoroastrianism), founded in 710 BCE by the Aldegarian prophet Shapur and based on a belief in ‘eternal fire’, which is thought to be present in all things. It follows a system of morality in which followers have a duty to fight against darkness through ‘good thoughts, good words and good deeds’. Two denominations exist, Ahadism (Mazdaism) and Zamānism (Zurvanism/Manichaeism/ Yazdânism). Ahadism, a monotheistic faith in which Yazdān (God) is said to be the creator of the universe, is the most popular. Primarily favoured by Aldegarians (Persians) and Mu-Tze (Mongols), it also includes belief in an evil spirit- Duzakh. Zamānism, on the other hand, is characterised by a distinct dualism between good and evil spirits. Emphasis is placed upon asceticism and non-violence. Zamānism is more prevalent within Ezadi (Iranian) minority groups and Ikpis (Aboriginal Australians). Historically, the relationship between Zamānis and the majority group has been mixed- with both discrimination as well as overrepresentation of Zamānis in power.

Hosianism (Christianity), one of Terra’s largest religions, is most common among Majatrans (Arabs) and Cildanians (Assyrians/Syriacs). The largest denominations are the Apostolic Church of the East (Eastern Christianity) and the Aldegarian Apostolic Church ((Nestorian) Church of the East).

Daenism (Buddhism) is a religion that was born in Aldegar in the 1st century CE as a sect within Zamānism (Zurvanism/Manichaeism/ Yazdânism), and which later spread Terra-wide, becoming one of the largest Terran religions.
Rowshanism (Babism/Mazdakism/Khurramism) is a new religion founded in 3736, based on the belief that Mihryazd, a 38th century Aldegarian, is the Mihr (Saoshyant+Maitreya), fulfilling eschatological expectations of other Aldegarian religions. Rowshanism follows a hedonistic and altruistic ethic, with an emphasis on radical egalitarianism.
